In Three Interviews, Taliban Commanders Detail Recruitment Of Insiders In Afghan Security Forces And Discuss Jihadi Activities In Badghis And Faryab Provinces

October 19, 2012
Special Dispatch No. 5015

Below are excerpts from interviews with Haji Abdul Samad, chief of the Taliban's Dawat-o-Irshad Commission for the southern and western zone, which is tasked by Mullah Omar with recruiting Afghan soldiers and policemen for defection to the Taliban ranks; Maulvi Abdul Quddus, a 28-year-old militant commander who has studied in Afghan and Pakistani madrassas and is responsible for jihadi activities in Afghanistan's Badghis province; and Mullah Ataullah Umri, who is the Taliban's shadow governor in Faryab province. Umri has also waged jihadi activities in Zabul and Badghis provinces.

Haji Abdul Samad's interview was published by Shahamat, the Pashtu-language monthly magazine of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (the Taliban's shadow government in the country). Maulvi Abdul Quddus's interview was published on the Urdu-language website of the Islamic Emirate; and Mullah Ataullah Umri's interview was published by Shariat, the Islamic Emirate's Urdu-language magazine.

Commander Haji Abdul Samad On Dawat-o-Irshad Commission's Responsibilities: "Following The Decree Of Emir-ul-Momineen [Mullah Omar] A Year Ago, The Commission Was Given The Task To Recruit People Working In The Enemy Ranks"

Following are excerpts from Haji Abdul Samad's interview:[1]

Question: "First of all, kindly introduce yourself and give us details of your responsibilities and job?"

Haji Abdul Samad: "My name is Haji Abdul Samad and I have previously discharged different responsibilities in the structure of the Islamic Emirate. Currently, I am the head of Dawat-o-Irshad commission for southern and western zones [of Afghanistan].

"For your information, I must say that the Dawat-o-Irshad commission has two working zones. The 13 southern provinces including Ghazni, Zabul, Kandahar, Helmand, Nimroz, Herat, Badghis, Faryab, Uruzgan and Sar-e-Pul form one working zone and I am its responsible chief. The second zone is consisting of 21 eastern, northern and central provinces and led by another person."

Question: "Kindly share with us details of the Dawat-o-Irshad Commission; when it came into existence, and what are its responsibilities."

Haji Abdul Samad: "The Dawat-o-Irshad Commission has been existing in the structure of the Islamic Emirate for long. It carried out preaching responsibilities in the past. However, following the decree of Emir-ul-Momineen [Taliban supreme leader Mullah Muhammad Omar] a year ago, the commission was given the task to recruit people working in the enemy ranks and put them on right track.

"Now, the prime responsibility of the commission is to invite Afghans who stand in the enemy rank and are discharging different duties in civil and military sectors, to abandon the enemy rank. It is aimed to save them [civil and military employees of Afghan government] from the damage in this world and the Hereafter on one hand, and to eliminate local support to foreign enemy and weaken their ranks on the other."

Question: "Does the Dawat-o-Irshad Commission have any other specific responsibility besides recruitment of opponents [Afghans working for government and foreign forces]?"

Haji Abdul Samad: "Besides this, the commission also has the duty to establish relations with tribal notables, clerics, elders, students, intellectuals and other segments of society so that their views could be heard and the Islamic Emirate can answer their questions and maintain warm relations with them. For this purpose, we have established different sections who meet different segment of Afghan nation inside and outside Afghanistan time by time."

"1,100 People Who Had Been Working In Different Military And Non-Military Departments Of The Enemy Renounced Their Past Acts And Parted Ways With The Enemy During The Past Eight Months In 13 Southern And Western Provinces"

Question: "Would you like to brief us on the structure of the commission?"

Haji Abdul Samad: "The Dawat-o-Irshad Commission has representatives in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan, and besides provincial representatives, representatives on district levels have also been appointed to a large extent and are normally performing their duty."

Question: "How many individuals in the enemy ranks have accepted your invitation and how did they stop supporting the infidels?"

Haji Abdul Samad: "As I said earlier, the Dawat-o-Irshad Commission was given the task of getting the loyalties of the people standing in the enemy rank a year ago, and it started its work in an organized manner. As for as my performance is concerned, 1,100 people who had been working in different military and non-military departments of the enemy [Afghan government and foreign forces] renounced their past acts and parted ways with the enemy during the past eight months in 13 southern and western provinces.

"The defection of 1,100 personnel [to the Taliban] is not only a big blow to the enemy in the term of personnel, but they also brought with them 700 small and heavy weapons, a large quantity of ammunitions and other equipments. Similarly, more than 20 incidents took place in these provinces in which the defectors opened fire on local and foreign troops and inflicted heavy casualties on them before joining the Taliban.

"Those who shun the enemy ranks include high and low-ranking Afghan National Army personnel, police and civil order police. A commander of the Border Corps joined Mujahideen along with arms and ammunitions in the western Herat province. Similarly, a commander of highway police in Farah province, Mirwais, defected to Mujahideen along with 40 personnel, two Ranger vehicles and a tank by taking advantage of Islamic Emirate's offer of providing protection to them [defectors]."

"We Provide Protection Of Life And Property To The People Who Shun The Enemy And Sincerely Renounce [Past Acts] And Announce Dissociation From The Enemy"; We Also Provide Them Financial Support As Per Our Ability And Provide Them Official [Identity] Cards"

Question: "How do you treat people who part ways with the enemy?"

Haji Abdul Samad: "Being representatives of the Islamic Emirate, we provide protection of life and property to the people who shun the enemy and sincerely renounce [past acts] and announce dissociation from the enemy. So, no one has the right to kill these people or harm them [after defection]. We accord them warm welcome on joining us as they renounce their past actions and stop supporting the enemy. We also provide them financial support as per our ability and provide them official [identity] cards so that no one can create problems for them. The card also carries a [telephone] number so that it [the commission] could be contacted when needed."

Question: "What is your working style and how do you communicate your Dawat and recruitment message to the enemy ranks?"

Haji Abdul Samad: "We are carrying forward our Dawat program by using different ways. We have zone officials in every province and district who contact people in the enemy ranks by using personal relations or representatives, letters, telephone, email and other personal contacts. We urge them to leave the infidel ranks and stop supporting the infidels as friendship with unbelief result in great loss not only in this world but also Hereafter."

Question: "How much role can it [the recruitment commission] play in the ouster of foreign invaders? What are your expectations?"

Haji Abdul Samad: "We saw the result of our work in the past; sometime it yielded higher results than our expectations. Thus far, a large number of people who were playing the role of frontline contingent of Americans and the Mujahideen were unable to reach foreigners due to their presence, have left the enemy ranks and stopped supporting the infidels.

"We must say that the American aggressors cannot stay in Afghanistan even for a single night without the support of Afghan forces. We launched this movement to dig the deceived Afghans who stand by Americans against Taliban in lust for money or due to some other propaganda out of ignorance. Praise to be Allah, the results are very good so far. I hope that this movement would also bring a massive change in the battlefield. The foreigners cannot offer any resistance sans the support of their Afghan servants.

"Following the past experience, our work has created huge trust. A large number of deceived people in the enemy ranks want to surrender to Mujahideen but they fear they might be killed or harmed after surrender [defection]. As far as my working area is concerned we have provided full protection to 1,100 people and no one has been killed or harmed by the Mujahideen. The same situation is in the whole Afghanistan. This has built peoples' trust into our work. God willing, we will get separate a large number of people from the enemy rank in the future."

"[Afghan Securitymen] Should Save Themselves From Destruction And Take Advantage Of The Chance Provided To Them By The Islamic Emirate [To Defect To The Taliban Ranks]; They Can Get Protection Of Life And Property And Return To Normal Life"

Question: "Being the head of Dawat-o-Irshad Commission, what is your message to the Afghans who are deceived through money and propaganda and currently stand by the infidels? We would convey your message to them through our publication."

Haji Abdul Samad: "My message to them is to take mercy on themselves, as the path they have adopted leads to ignorance and destruction. By following this path, they would meet humiliation in this world and in the Hereafter, as we repeatedly witnessed in the history of Islam and in Afghanistan that those who supported the combatant infidels against their Muslim Ummah were called traitors, puppets and hirelings in this world and will face humiliation in the Hereafter and face curse of Allah.

"Therefore, they should save themselves from destruction and take advantage of the chance provided to them by the Islamic Emirate. They can get protection of life and property and return to normal life. They will not find such a satisfactory atmosphere if there emerges a revolutionary situation in the future.

"So, they should think in this regard. Those serving in the army, police, militias, other organs and civil department should think for awhile that in which ranks they stand, who hired them and who are paying them salaries. What would be their condition if they die in a situation supporting the infidel? They should say yes to the message of Islam, as it is in their interest here and Hereafter. They can contact Mujahideen's responsible man for Dawat-o-Irshad Commission in their respective districts and provinces or contact us on this number: 0708298195 in order to part ways with the enemy and make their future secure."

"In 2007, The Former Jihadi Governor Of Badghis Maulavi Dastageer Sahib And I Used To Study In Helmand"; "'Til Then There Had Been No Notable Jihadi Action In Badghis"

Following are excerpts from Maulvi Abdul Quddus's interview:[2]

Question: "Maulvi Sahib, first of all give us details about the beginning of jihad in Badghis. When and how the practical jihad was initiated there?"

Maulvi Abdul Quddus: All praise is to Him [Allah] and peace be on the merciful Prophet…. In reply to your question, I would like to say that the northern areas went out of the Taliban's control after the U.S. attacked the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Like other areas of Afghanistan, the thieves, dacoits and old goons came out to collect taxes in Badghis and unleashed atrocities on this Momin [true Muslims] and Mujahid community. It is my own observation that these dacoits, in 200-300 numbers, used to enter a village and loot the house which they thought to have belonged to a person who was either Taliban or had any sympathy with the Taliban.

"In general, these groups of goons used to loot everything but they took special care to recover arms ammunition, explosives or weapons so that they [people or the Taliban supporters] could not remain in a position to resist. It would not be an exaggeration if I say that after the fall [of the Taliban government in 2001] for some years there remained no heavy or lighter weapons in Badghis with which the jihadi activities could have been initiated. That is why no jihadi activities could be initiated in Badghis many years after the U.S. occupation, although the jihadi passion and jihadi feelings were there enthused in people in great quantity. But weapons are needed for war and there remained no such things which could be used.

"In 2007, the former jihadi governor of Badghis Maulavi Dastageer Sahib and I used to study in Helmand and we used to take part in jihadi activities along with our studies. 'Til then there had been no notable jihadi action in Badghis. At that time Maulvi Abdur Rahman Haqqani was appointed as the in-charge of Badghis by the Islamic Emirate. After consulting with him, I and Maulvi Dastageer Sahib set off for Badghis from the south with jihadi intentions. We were in such a tough condition at that time that our travel money got spent during the journey itself. However, we decided to start our work from the district of upper Murghab. For the first time we went to a jihadi commander in a village in upper Murghab in search of weapons… He provided us with a Kalashnikov, may Allah give him better rewards. Then Baaz Mohammad Sahib of Qaurtu area in the same district gave us a rocket. Similarly, we got some companions also with the passage of time. We began jihad with these limited resources.

"When the numbers of our companions reached 12, then we for the first time attacked the security of an enemy's NGO. The coming night we carried out an attack in upper Murghab and then we started a series of attacks on different checkposts. Initially we used to attack at nights only but with the passage of time we got lots of weapons and other things in booty. The number of our companions increased. We gradually became self-sufficient in terms of weapons also. There is a hilly area in upper Murghab called Hauz-e-Kabood. We established a center here. When this got famous in Badghis that Mujahideen have come up there, then those who had jihadi passions and craze began coming here as if they were waiting for such information. Thus the strength and weapons of Mujahideen began to increase. With the increase in numbers and weapons we expanded our activities to other areas like Maqur, Dara and Boom and conquered many vast areas. At that time Maulvi Dastageer the Martyr, may Allah bless him, was our commander. Thus began our work in Badghis.

"Two years later, Maulvi Dastageer Sahib was arrested in an area of Herat [the province of Afghanistan]. He remained in enemy custody for six months and when he came back after his release he began the work without any break or delay. Under his command only, we won the historic battle at Akazo in the area of upper Murghab in which we got hold of a big cache of enemy weapons and convoy. Half of the 45 vehicles were destroyed in the Mujahideen's attack in that war while we got hold of the remaining half in perfect condition. We caught many enemy troops alive while we got weapons in such huge quantity that we are still using them…. after that, jihad is continuing in full swing in Badghis with the help of Allah. And then there came a time when the land of Badghis was freed from the presence of enemies…

Those who have been martyred include Maulvi Dastageer, Maulvi Ismail, Maulvi Baaz Mohammad, Jamaluddin Mansoor, Abdur Rahman Akhandzadeh, Maulvi Syed Hakeem, Mullah Amiruddin, Mullah Fazluddin, Maulvi Daud, Maulvi Abdur Razzaq, Syed Ali Shah Agha, Mullah Sur Gul Rahimullah, and others."

"According To Our Data There Are 1,050 Armed Mujahideen In Upper Murghab, 500 In Ghor[mach] And 419 In Dara Boom Are In Ever-Ready Mode To Fight"; "There Is Only One Area In Badghis Where Jihadi Activities Are Weak And That Is The Area Of Qala Naw"

Question: "Thank you so much for providing information regarding the jihadi journey in Badghis, comprising many years. If we come to the present situation, what would you say about the present condition in Badghis?"

Maulvi Abdul Quddus: "By the grace of Allah, the activities of Mujahideen are continuing in full swing in Badghis... Most of the people in the area are Mujahid in practice and intentions. Common people who were fed up with the local goons and oppressors they consider the sacred path of jihad as the salvation for them. Most areas of Badghis have been freed from enemy's presence. Mujahideen are practically in control of all the areas comprising of Upper Murghab, Ghormach, Ab Kamari, Sang-e-Aatish, Maqur, Qadis, Jawand and Dara Boom. The enemy's presence has been limited to the district headquarters and their adjoining areas only.

"If we talk on the basis of data, then according to our data there are 1,050 armed Mujahideen in upper Murghab, 500 in Ghor[mach] and 419 in Dara Boom are in ever-ready mode to fight. Similarly, our preparations are continuing in other districts as per the need of the area. Beside these Mujahideen, we are sure that the whole of Badghis are with us if need be. There is only one area in Badghis where jihadi activities are weak and that is the area of Qala Naw, the central area of Badghis province. So far Mujahideen have not achieved any remarkable success in this area. Mujahideen are trying to find an opportunity to spread their activities in this important area."

Question: "Enemies have time and again said that Mujahideen groups have been wiped out from the North and Northwestern provinces because of the organized operations, espionage system and hired police. We would be much obliged if you provide the details about the enemy's claims regarding Badghis."

Maulvi Abdul Quddus: "It is true that the enemies have carried out all these activities in Badghis too, like other northern provinces; but all their programs fell flat due to non-cooperation from the local people. Mujahideen might have vacated some places due to widespread air attacks and ground operations by the enemies, but it is routine tactics in guerilla warfare. It is termed as technical defeat but Mujahideen have come back to those areas and enemies have been forced to vacate those areas after receiving heavy losses of life and property.

"For instance, Nakhcharistan is a hilly area of strategic importance in the vicinity of Dara Boom and which is connected to many of districts in Badghis. The enemies carried out heavy attacks and established check-posts after aerial and land campaign and deployed about 200 officials. But after a few days of their operations Mujahideen suddenly attacked them one day. About 300 Mujahideen were involved in that attack. Mujahideen destroyed all the enemy checkposts in that attack. Some of the enemy troops were killed on the spot, while others saved their lives by escaping into the adjoining areas and some were exploded in bomb explosions. Now this area is fully free from the enemy. Providing supplies to other checkposts in these areas have become an issue for them and their daily expenses have also increased…

"Those who had joined the enemy's ranks are now coming back to the Mujahideen fold after laying down their arms. For instance, a group of 50 people unanimously laid down their arms before the Mujahideen in the last days of Jamadiul Ula [fifth month of Islamic calendar]. These things show that all attempts from the enemies are being defeated. They have had no success on administrative levels. Now they are left with the false propaganda on radio as their last resort through which they are trying to uplift their low morale."

"Karzai Is A U.S. Puppet And The Situation Will Remain The Same As Long As Americans Are Here"; "Afghanistan Is A Mujahid, Momin And Steadfast Community; Jihadi Feeling Is Alive And Conspicuous Here"

Question: "Maulvi Sahib, if you have any opinion or advice for more activism among Mujahid in Badghis [we] hope that you would share it with us."

Maulvi Abdul Quddus: "Mujahideen have given peerless sacrifices in Badghis like they have done in the whole of Afghanistan during past few years' jihad. They have given many passionate … [jihadi] songs to awaken [people] from the slumber of ignorance and added guiding memories in the history of Islam. I have to say it with much grief that these tales of Mujahideen's valor remain unnoticed. I can say it with much conviction that if the sacrifices of Mujahideen are gathered from the length and breadth of Afghanistan, it would make a glittering and matchless chapter of Islamic history. I would like to narrate the story of a 12-year-young boy in reply to your question as an example, which shows the sense of honor and jihadi craving.

"Some time ago, Americans began their operation in Dara Boom district of Badghis. Americans entered a village named Kabulchi for a search. There is a mosque in that village and Peer Mohammad Sahib, a prominent revered person and elder cleric, is the prayer leader there. Some students also used to stay with him in that mosque, whom he used to teach religious books. When Americans entered that village, a 12-year-old boy with the passion of jihad in his heart stood behind the gate of the mosque with sickle in his hands. When a U.S. soldier peeped into the mosque he hit his face with the sickle with all his might. Blood came out gushing from the face of the U.S. soldier. The U.S. soldier arrested the young boy immediately. He was released because he was very young and the villagers also made a great request. There are many such incidents…."

Question: "Let's come to a general question, Maulvi Sahib. It is our last question to you. Some days ago on May 2 of this year, the Kabul government signed a Strategic Agreement with the U.S., which is still a topic of discussion. As a Mujahid of Badghis, what would you like to say on this?"

Maulvi Abdul Quddus: "After the May 2nd deal of strategic cooperation between [Afghan President Hamid] Karzai and [U.S. President Barack] Obama, Americans carried out barbaric bombardment on the tent of gypsies at Mangam in Murghab district of Badghis on May 5, in which 14 women and children were martyred while four others were injured. In my view and in the opinion of others like me this incident is the first 'success' of the Strategic Agreement of Karzai. After this agreement, Karzai declared that the occupation of foreign troops on this land has been legalized. This shows that they would consider the barbaric bombardment on the gypsies of Badghis as legal.

"In my view this agreement holds no meaning [to Afghans] because the U.S. has landed here due to their power. Karzai is a U.S. puppet and the situation will remain the same as long as Americans are here. The Kabul government has shown its true face to the Afghan people with this agreement. And they have announced that they are such crooked that they could also sell Afghanistan in the name of strategic cooperation.

"In my view Afghanistan is a Mujahid, Momin and steadfast community. Jihadi feeling is alive and conspicuous here. This community has this capability to wrest back its freedom from the occupation enemy. Karzai can never be the real and spiritual son and representative of this Mujahid soil. This agreement is a matter between the lord and the slave which has been brought on to the people. Afghans should not be much concerned about it…."

"The Jihadi Formations Are There In All The 16 Tehsils Of Faryab; There Is No Area In Faryab Where There Is No Mujahideen"; The Northern Areas From The Highway Which Constitute The Major Part Of Faryab Are Under Taliban's Complete Control"

Following are excerpts from Mullah Ataullah Umri's Interview:[3]

Question: "Respected Umri Sahib, first of all we welcome you. Please give the general details about Faryab province in the beginning."

Mullah Ataullah Umri: "All praise is for Allah, the Sustainer of the Universe and peace be on the leader of Mujahideen – Prophet Muhammad and his family members and all his companions….

"First of all, I present the gift of Prophet Muhammad and that is peace be on you all. I would like to say about the question that Faryab is one among the northern provinces of Afghanistan with Turkmenistan on its north, Badghis in … [the west], Ghor in South and Jowzjan and Sar-e-Pul in the east. Faryab consists of the following …Tehsils [districts] : 1-Almar; 2-Gheisar; 3-Pashton Koot; 4-Chehal Gazai; 5-Khwaja Musa; 6-Khaje Sabzpoosh; 7-Shirin Tagab; 8-Dolat Abad; 9-Andkhoi; 10-Gharam Ghol; 11-Khan Charbagh; 12-Gharaghan; 13-Bol Cheragh; 14-Garzivan; 15-Lolash; 16- Bandar.

"The people of Faryab are also poor and war victims like other Afghans. The people here are landlords [cultivators] by occupation and [landlords] are wealthy."

Question: "Please tell us something about the Mujahideen's activities and their feats, and also tell us how far your rule expands."

Mullah Ataullah Umri: "First of all I am thankful to Allah that the jihadi formations are there in all the 16 Tehsils of Faryab. There is no area in Faryab where there is no Mujahideen. The highway that comes from Mazar to Herat through Faryab divides the said province into two parts. The part south of the highway is called Kohistanat [hilly areas] and the part on the north is called Turkistan. The northern areas from the highway which constitute the major part of Faryab [province] are under Taliban's complete control except the center [of the province].

"For example, a Mujahid can carry on his activities in the northeast from Andkhoi to Badghis because all these Tehsils have been won and enemies are confined to the center and some of their checkposts on the central highway only. Now Mujahideen roam around here in the form of caravans and perform their obligations to call towards Islam. Now enemies can enter here only through aerial routes or in the form of a very big caravan and that too with the aerial help but in that case also it is not easy for the enemies to escape.

"Mujahideen are also present there on the south of the highway, which includes some of the hilly areas beside Bolcheragh and Bandar. But they are not much powerful here as they are there in the northern part. Here they carry on guerilla activities and perform Dawah [spreading the message of Islam] activities and at times carry out attacks on the enemies. In general, it can be said by the Grace of Allah that Mujahideen are moving towards success day by day in Faryab province."

"[The Anti-Taliban Militia's] Only Credit Is That When A Big Caravan Of The Crusader Forces Enters The Mujahideen Area, Then They Work As Route Guide And Do Espionage For Them"; "They Identify The Houses Of Mujahideen And Beside That They Don't Have Any Courage To Stand Against The Mujahideen"

Question: "Enemies claim that services of thousands of Arbakian [anti-Taliban militias] have been taken in the north which resulted in much success and these areas have been taken back from the Mujahideen. What have you to say on this?"

Mullah Ataullah Umri: "The experiments of Arbakian or Mahalbi police was imported from Iraq, and for that the enemies carried out media trials [propaganda] on a large scale and it is being done even today. If we look at its role then [we find that] it also proved to be a source of loss to the enemies for many million [dollars] were spent on it and it has no role to play.

"Although the enemies are making big claims that they have achieved success through these mercenaries (Arbakian) in the north, I am telling you about the things that I have seen with my own eyes. The enemies have armed the [old policemen] in the name of Arbakian again in five Tehsils (of Dolatabad, Shirin Togab, Qaisar, Chehal Gazi and Khwaja Sabzpoosh), but they could not get any areas freed from the Mujahideen with their help nor do they dare to come out of their fronts [bases].

"The vast area from Dolat Abad to Chehal Gazai which is known as Shireen Nawai has the great highway and Arbakian have their checkposts at many places. Even from there [the checkposts], they cannot go to their houses on the two sides of the highways and they cannot create any problem for the Mujahideen as well.

"Their only credit is that when a big caravan of the Crusader forces enters the Mujahideen area, then they work as route guide and do espionage for them; they identify the houses of Mujahideen and beside that they don't have any courage to stand against the Mujahideen. Apart from that, many officers of the hired police have been killed in the unabated guerilla attacks by the Mujahideen and most of them have left their jobs due to fear and now it is not possible for them to get more hired killers because this mischief cannot sustain any more."

"Prominent Leaders Of The Enemies… Were Killed In The Guerilla Attacks By The Mujahideen"; "Hired Policeman … Hamidullah Who Was Injured In A Mujahideen Attack Remained Admitted At A Hospital… And Was Killed In The Hospital Bed Only"

Question: "How do you evaluate the last year's performances of your jihadi activities?"

Mullah Ataullah Umri: "The way the outgoing year is considered as the year of success and victories throughout Afghanistan [for the Mujahideen], Faryab was also not far behind as attacks, rocket fires and bomb attacks on enemies continued throughout the year on a daily basis. Five suicide attacks during past year pestered the enemies much and the latest of them was carried out a few days ago in Maymana, the capital of Faryab, with extreme expertise on a U.S. convoy in which many of enemies' soldiers were killed and injured.

"The enemies attacked the area of Khwaja Kanti [ph] in Gheisar Tehsil, which is considered the area under Mujahideen control, many times last year and tried to win it but every time they met with failure after the great resistance from the Mujahideen. Mujahideen fought against every attack in which they [enemies] had to bear heavy losses. Similarly, enemies began an operation in the area of Aqadri [ph] in Pashtun Koot Tehsil and Mujahideen defeated the enemies badly in the three-day war. According to our information, 47 internal [i.e. Afghan] and external soldiers were killed in that war. The custom of mourning was performed in their memorial in Maymana. The enemies were forced to take flight after such operations."

Question: "The killing of noted leaders and high military officials of the enemies also comes under the success of Badr Operations. Have there occurred such incidents in your province also?"

Mullah Ataullah Umri: "Yes of course! Indeed the last year's Badr Operations revived the remembrance of Ghazwa-e-Badr [the first war in Islam] because the way prominent leaders of infidels and polytheists were killed in Ghazwa-e-Badr [in the same way] prominent personalities of the enemies were killed in the last year's operations also. Some of the prominent leaders including some officers of the enemies were killed in Faryab.

"For example, intelligence officer Sayed Ahmed, military officer General Najibullah of Andkhoi, enemies' military officer Salam Pahalwan in Almar and General Yunus besides General Hamidullah and General Zabit of Dolatabad were killed in various attacks by the Mujahideen."

Question: "How are your activities in Maymana city and other central areas?"

Mullah Ataullah Umri: "Beside the war activities, individual actions and guerilla attacks are also meeting with success. Mujahideen take recourse to different tactics and target the enemies. Some of the prominent leaders of the enemies which I mentioned [above] were killed in the guerilla attacks by the Mujahideen. For example, hired policeman (Arbakian) Hamidullah who was injured in a Mujahideen attack remained admitted at a hospital in Maymana and was killed in the hospital bed only.

"Similarly, an officer Yunus of Almar who was participating in the Buzkushi [horse-riding] competition got killed by one of our Mujahideen while he was on the back of his horse only. Beside that many Mujahideen carried out various guerilla attacks. All Praise is to Allah, Mujahideen have great impact in enemies' ranks today and taking advantage from this they can carry out big attacks from within."

"Afghans With A Sense Of Honor Should Strengthen The Iron Hands Of The Islamic Emirate … Which Has Raised The Flag Of Jihad Against The Americans"; "They Should Give Them All Sorts Of Materialistic And Moral Support And Should Join Them At Their Call Of Jihad"

Question: "How much support do Mujahideen get from the people of Faryab?"

Umri Sahab: "The people of Faryab are sympathetic towards Mujahideen, and this sympathy is there without any hope [of reward] and as distinction against the propaganda from the enemies. The people of Afghanistan are with the Mujahideen like brothers and are hell-bent on destroying the Crusader forces and their tools, the hired laborers.

"I present an example of people's support. About two months ago, one of our groups consisting of 70 Mujahideen was engaged against the enemies in Ghaweli [ph] village in Almar Tehsil. Though the enemies were in great numbers, the Mujahideen were successful in driving them out because the villagers who were about 200 in number joined the ranks of Mujahideen; some of them were directly involved in the war while others were supporting; so much so that women were also not lagging behind in support.

"The truth is that the people of Faryab are much aggrieved by … the Kabul government, police and army these days. This nation which has lived in peace and tranquility under the Islamic Emirate [of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001] would never allow any tyrant and oppressor ruler anymore… That is why they are very kind towards Mujahideen. The villagers are included in the ranks of the Mujahideen; the people from cities support Mujahideen with money, clothes and medicine. This very help is the mystery behind Mujahideen's success."

Question: "Respected Umri Sahab, what message would you like to give our readers?"

Umri Sahab: "My message to the whole [Muslim] ummah is that the people of Afghanistan should know it now that the U.S. and its allies are warring infidels; their objective to come here is to stop those who want to bring one Islamic system; Afghans with a sense of honor should strengthen the iron hands of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan which has raised the flag of jihad against the Americans; they should give them all sorts of materialistic and moral support and should join them at their call of jihad.

"To achieve their nefarious targets some of the satanic lobbies propagate this that Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is a national and regional movement… I would like to tell them that I myself belong to the Uzbek nation, and as a resident of Andkhoi and I have travelled the whole of Afghanistan; I have visited many villages and have met people of various nationalities in Paktia, Paktika, Ghazni, and Zabul during my jihadi journey for 12 days in a row; similarly my jihadi companions have lived at the jihadi fronts but we have not found any regional, linguistic and national bias in the ranks of Islamic Emirate. All the big and small in the Islamic Emirate consider themselves responsible before Allah; our ideal and goal is one religion and one faith. We call communism and nationalism as ignorance. We must be watchful to the propagation from the enemies; our enemies want to achieve their goals by dividing us on the lines of national bias.

"In the end I wish to give you this good tiding that Allah willing the day is not far away when the U.S. and its Allies would also disintegrate against Jihad like the Soviet Union and a true and real Islamic system would once again be implemented in the country.…"
