Tablighi Jamaat, a revivalist Islamic movement in South Asia, has attracted international attention in recent years for its role as a conduit for Al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups. Headquartered in New Delhi, the puritanical religious movement has a large number of followers around the world, but its main support base is centered in Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. Indian Barelvi Cleric Demands Ban On Tablighi Jamaat For Al- Qaeda Link

In India, prominent Barelvi cleric Maulana Saeed Noori has said that he would ask the Indian home ministry to ban Tablighi Jamaat after the WikiLeaks disclosure that Al-Qaeda terrorists had links with the Jamaat in the 1980s, according to an Indian website. Maulana Saeed Noori of the Raza Academy in Mumbai said, "The Tablighi Jamaat helped Al-Qaeda. We will ask the home ministry to ... ban... the group."

Indian Religious Leaders Condemn WikiLeaks Report Linking Al-Qaeda With Tablighi Jamaat

Prominent Indian Muslim have condemned the linking of terrorist organization Al-Qaeda with Tablighi Jamaat, saying that it is a pre-planned conspiracy to defame Tablighi Jamaat and Muslims, according to an Urdu-language daily. Tablighi Jamaat is an international revivalist, puritanical movement of Islam with headquarters in New Delhi. WikiLeaks recently revealed that Al-Qaeda militants used the cover of Tablighi Jamaat to get visas to go to Pakistan. Dismissing the WikiLeaks disclosures that linked Al-Qaeda with Tablighi Jamaat, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind Maulana leader Mahmood Madani said, "It is a pre-planned conspiracy to defame this religious organization [Tablighi Jamaat] whose activities are confined to religious issues such as Namaz [five times prayers], fear of resurrection day, and social reforms, etc."

2.5 Million Muslims Join Tablighi Jamaat's Congregation In Bangladesh

Nearly 2.5 million devout Muslims from across the world joined the Akheri Munajat (concluding prayers) during Tablighi Jamaat's congregation in the town of Tongi in Bangladesh, according to a Bangladeshi newspaper. The devotees sought forgiveness and blessings from Allah for Muslims around the world, according to a report in The Daily Star newspaper. Barelvi Clerics Slammed For Making Jew-Like Demands For Action Against Extremist Religious Organizations

Deobandi clerics from various madrassas and religious organizations in Pakistan have slammed Barelvi clerics' demand for action against religious groups who support militant organizations, according to an Urdu-language daily. Speaking at a press conference at the Jamia Naeemia madrassa, a prominent Deobandi seminary based in Karachi, the Deobandi clerics urged the government of Punjab province not to accept the demands of the Sunni Ittehad Council, a Barelvi group that has called for action against extremist groups. Demand for action against extremist Deobandi groups and militant organizations has become louder after the July 1 attacks on a shrine in Lahore where more than 40 people were killed and over 175 wounded. The clerics said that action against Deobandi groups alone in the name of counterterrorism is not acceptable, according to a report in the Urdu-language daily Roznama Islam of July 7.

A report in a pro-Taliban Pakistani daily has criticized India for disallowing a number of foreign Islamic religious leaders of Tablighi Jamaat from preaching and attending religious meetings in India. Waziristan: Taliban Suspend Fighting Till 5th March

The Taliban have suspended their military activities in Pakistan's tribal district of North Waziristan till 5th March next as a Tablighi Ijtema, or religious congregation, is being held in the neighboring town of Bannu, according to a report in the Pashtu-language newspaper Wrazpanra Wahdat. A commander of Taliban (Hafiz Gul Bahadar group) in North Waziristan district said that all the Taliban have been directed not to target government installations due to a Tablighi Ijtema in Bannu.
