The State of Anarchy Within the Salafi-Jihadi Movement in Gaza: An Inside View

On May 26, 2009, an Islamist forum posted an article by Abu Hamza Al-Maqdisi, an anonymous yet active writer in the Islamist forums who posts regularly about Hamas and its persistent struggle to uproot the salafi movement in Gaza. The article, posted on the Al-Faluja forum and titled "The Salafiyya of Gaza, Its Ideological Predicament, and Its Obscure Future"[1] paints a gloomy picture of the salafi movement in Gaza. Abu Hamza, himself an adherent of the salafi-jihadi doctrine in Gaza, criticizes the salafi-jihadi groups for being unwilling to make concessions in order to unite under one banner and allow the spread of the doctrine in Gaza. He warns that due to this lack of unity and of clear guidance, individual salafis who are not necessarily well-versed in the salafi-jihadi doctrine are carrying out violent attacks against what they perceive as corrupt places, thus playing into the hands of Hamas and turning society away from the salafi-jihadi groups in Gaza. He concludes by urging adherents of the salafi-jihadi doctrine in Gaza to ignore the salafi-jihadi groups in Gaza and instead to seek guidance directly from the global jihad leadership.
