MEMRI research continues to focus on the most recent developments in the Arab and Muslim world, providing key research, primary source translations, and original analysis to U.S. and foreign governments, counterterrorism officials, law enforcement, militaries, and other authorities, to help them tackle threats and prevent terror attacks. We work with media to inform their understanding of the complexities of issues and developments in the Middle East and South Asia, Russia, and China, and serve as a valuable resource for academia worldwide.
We also continue to assist U.S. federal and state agencies and governments overseas, including throughout Europe and in Australia, by providing real-time information on threats and alerts that we identify in our monitoring of domestic terrorist, white supremacist, antisemitic, and jihadi online activity. No one else does the work that we are doing.
Throughout the COVID-19 crisis and beyond, MEMRI has remained one of the world's most productive nonprofit think tanks focusing on the Middle East and South Asia and on threats to the U.S. and the West. Our research output equals or surpasses that of similar organizations many times our size with many times our budget. MEMRI TV In 2021: Releasing Clip No. 9000 – Now Over 330 Million Views Worldwide
In July 2021, MEMRI TV released its 9,000th clip, topping nearly 60,000 minutes of translated content since the project's launch in 2004. These clips, from Arab and Iranian as well as from Urdu, Turkish, Russian, and Chinese channels, are used by governments, intelligence agencies, law enforcement, legislatures, media, and academia worldwide, with over 330 million views to date in 238 countries and territories, and often prompt reactions from the media outlets highlighted in them. The MEMRI TV Archives comprise the world's largest collection of broadcast video content translated from these languages into English. In 2021 the project has so far released 585 translated clips, and MEMRI TV clips have had a total of more than 10 million views on all platforms. Helping Fight Extremism Through Our Cutting-Edge Research Projects
On a daily basis, MEMRI is helping fight extremism, on the ground and in cyberspace, through our Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor (JTTM), Domestic Terrorism Threat Monitor (DTTM), and Cyber and Jihad Lab (CJL) projects. This year the JTTM assisted U.S. and Western authorities with massive amounts of information on jihadis, including potential lone-wolf attackers – leading, in some cases, to arrests and prosecutions. The DTTM continues to track online neo-Nazi and white supremacist incitement, in the U.S. and internationally, exposing planning, threats, and calls to action, and works closely with authorities in the U.S. and abroad. Additionally, the CJL is consistently on the forefront of research into terrorist use of cryptocurrency and encryption, social media, drone technology, and hacktivism, and works with Capitol Hill, the Department of Justice, and other government agencies, as well as with tech companies and technology industry leaders in the U.S. and abroad.

In offices located around the globe, MEMRI's dedicated research teams produce cutting-edge research around the clock, seven days a week, 365 days a year. In 2021, major events they covered included:
Iran: As Iran-Azerbaijan tensions continue following last year's Nagorno-Karabakh war, and as Iran increases its open support for its proxy militias in countries across the region – including for Hizbullah and Hamas – the Iranian regime moves forward with its nuclear program as it pushes the U.S. to lift its sanctions on it. This year, we launched our Iran Threat Monitor Project (ITMP) focusing on these and other threats.
Palestinians: During the May 2021 Gaza conflict, MEMRI researchers and translators worked around the clock, monitoring not only what all the terrorist groups involved were saying but also tracking statements by Palestinian and Iranian officials, jihadis, and others across the Arab and Muslim world, in print, online, broadcast, and social media.
Iraq: Iraq continues to struggle under Iranian hegemony, subject to violent pressure by Iran via the Iran-backed Shi'ite militias that also threaten and attack U.S. interests – all extensively translated and analyzed by MEMRI.
Syria: MEMRI continues to follow the unending violence in Syria, where the northern sector is controlled and defended by Turkey as its eastern sector is controlled by Iran – as examined and analyzed by MEMRI.
Lebanon: Lebanese citizens' criticism of Hizbullah increases, with accusations that the Iran-backed Shi'ite organization has hijacked the country, amid its crippling economic crisis. In recent days, MEMRI has been covering the measures being taken by the GCC states – Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Bahrain – to boycott Lebanon, since they see it as an Iranian colony. This year, MEMRI published extensive translations and analysis on these and other developments in the country.
Turkey: MEMRI research is following Turkey's ongoing military adventures in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Syria, Iraq, Libya, and the eastern Mediterranean, and the prospect of nuclear cooperation between Turkey and nuclear-armed Pakistan, as well as its establishment of relations with the new Taliban government in Afghanistan.
South Asia and the Taliban: Following the fall of Kabul and the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August, MEMRI continues to monitor the shifting alliances in the region.
Qatar: As Qatar simultaneously lauds and supports the Taliban while continuing to gain influence with the U.S., Qatar's school curricula was found by a MEMRI study to promote jihad and martyrdom.
Russia: The Russian Media Studies Project (RMSP) continues its monitoring of the Russian political scene domestically and in the Russian orbit, with the assistance of noted Russian scholar Dr. Vladislav L. Inozemtsev.
China: The Chinese Media Studies Project (CMSP) monitors, translates, and analyzes primary source content from print and online Chinese media, including videos from Chinese TV channels, and official government documents and transcripts. In the coming weeks, it will complete a comprehensive study of Chinese schoolbooks. The project aims to analyze the ideology and foreign policy of today's No. 1 threat to the U.S.
Sermons By Imams In The West Project – Exposing extremist imams preaching anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial, and extremism. Recent MEMRI TV clips of hate-filled sermons by imams throughout the U.S. and Canada have prompted widespread criticism from political leaders and public apologies from some imams. This year, the project published a total of 32 sermons – 20 from nine U.S. states, five from Canada, two from Australia, three from Europe, and two from South America.
Lantos Archives on Anti-Semitism and Holocaust Denial – Named for the distinguished late Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor to serve in Congress, this project exposes Muslim anti-Semitism in the Arab and Muslim world and in the West, and maintains the largest archives in the world on this subject.
Reform Project – Seeking out and amplifying the voices of Arab and Muslim figures and intellectuals who preach tolerance and coexistence, promote civil, human, and women's rights, and speak out against and counter hatred, anti-Semitism, and jihad.
