Mujahideen Call to Shut Down Baghdad Universities in Order to Protect Students and Faculty from Muqtada Al-Sadr's Death Squads

On December 5, 2006, Islamist websites posted a series of announcements issued by the jihad group Jama'at Ansar Al-Sunna. The announcements state that the universities and seminaries in Baghdad have become "hotbeds and nests for [Muqtada Al-Sadr's] death squads," and must therefore be shut down in order to protect faculty and students. One of the announcements says: "Our scholars graduated from these universities but are now being killed within their gates... There is no way to stop this bloodshed except by stopping the activities of these universities." Another warns the students: "Do not attend universities and seminaries in Baghdad, [since] you will become easy prey for [Muqtada Al-Sadr's] death squads."
