Cartoons In Qatari Dailies Slam Trump Administration's Response To Coronavirus Crisis

May 7, 2020
Qatar | Special Dispatch No. 8739
In the recent weeks, the Qatari press – both the establishment press and the London-based Qatari dailies – have published many cartoons criticizing the U.S. administration's handling of the coronavirus crisis. The cartoons deride the U.S. and the Trump administration for losing control of the pandemic and for the administration's hasty decisions that contributed to the high death toll from the virus. They also mock Trump's decision to halt U.S. funding to the World Health Organization (WHO) in the midst of the pandemic, and one cartoon presented Trump as a greater threat to the world than the virus. Trump is worse than the coronavirus (Al-Arabi Al-Jadid, London, April 9, 2020) The following are some of these cartoons. 1. Trump Administration's Incompetent Response To The Pandemic Right: Trump says: "Nothing to worry about, I'll take control of it in no time." Left: The virus grabs Trump (Al-Quds Al-Arabi, London, April 5, 2020) Coronavirus threatens to sink the American ship, as Trump says "Everything is under control, just…" (Al-Quds Al-Arabi, London, April 20, 2020) White House yells "help us" as coronavirus overtakes U.S." (Al-Arab, Qatar, April 2, 2020)   Trump helpless in the face of "the rising coronavirus death toll and accusations of negligence against him" (Al-Quds Al-Arabi, London, April 2, 2020) Statue of liberty terrified as coronavirus spreads (Al-Arabi Al-Jadid, London, April 18, 2020) As "number of coronavirus cases in U.S. tops one million," the virus declares: "And here is the first-place winner in number of cases" – the U.S. (Al-Arab, Qatar, May 2, 2020) Coronavirus death toll in U.S. (Al-Quds Al-Arabi, London, April 3, 2020) 2. U.S. Halts WHO Funding Trump shackles the WHO in the midst of the fight against the pandemic (Al-Sharq, Qatar, April 19, 2020) Trump, in the guise of a coronavirus, undermines the WHO's efforts to fight the pandemic  (Al-Arabi Al-Jadid, London, April 16, 2020) U.S. halts WHO funding amid the global fight against the virus (Al-Arab, Qatar, April 19, 2020)

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas: If Israel Announces Plans To Annex Even A Single Centimeter Of Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, Settlements, Cave Of The Patriarchs, The Palestinian Authority Will Consider Itself No Longer Bound By Any Of Its Agreements With Israel, U.S.

#7977 | 04:02
Source: Palestinian Authority TV

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a May 5, 2020 address that was posted on the Facebook page of Palestine TV that the countries of the world do not agree on where the coronavirus came from and that no serious effort is being made to find a vaccine or medicine for it. He also said that in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Palestinian Authority has been dealing with the Deal of the Century and with potential Israeli annexation of the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, settlements in the West Bank, and the Cave of the Patriarchs. President Abbas declared that if Israel announces that it plans to annex even a single centimeter of any of these areas, the Palestinian Authority will consider itself no longer bound by any of the agreements that it has signed with Israel and the United States. In addition, he insisted that the correct number of Palestinian refugees from 1948 is 950,000, and not 850,000 or 250,000 as has been claimed by others.

Mahmoud Abbas: "As you and I are hearing, the countries of the world disagree on many things and they disagree on where this [COVID-19] virus came from, how it appeared, what its nature is... Worse still, to this moment, there are no serious efforts to find a cure, a vaccine, or a medicine that can stop the existence of this disease.

[...]

"In the midst of this tragedy, we have been dealing with the Deal of the Century and with the annexation declared by... Well, the Israelis still haven't officially declared the annexation of the Jordan Valley, of the Dead Sea, of the settlements, and of the Cave of the Patriarchs. They are now focusing – and I am saying this with the press present... The Israeli government is now focusing on the Cave of the Patriarchs. They want to take a few square meters to do something. We will consider this the beginning of the annexation. Therefore, if Israel announces that it plans to annex even a single centimeter of the Cave of the Patriarchs, the settlements, or the Jordan River, we will consider ourselves to be no longer bound by all the agreements that we have signed with them and with the Americans. Why the Americans? Because they are the ones who brought the Deal of the Century and they are the ones who inspired the Israelis [to go on] with the annexation. They are the ones who pushed them towards this. So they cannot say to us: 'We have nothing to do with this. Israel is making these decisions.' The Deal of the Century came from America. All of the American officials talked about it multiple times – the Secretary of State and others. They said that this deal would be implemented. We will not wait for its implementation. The moment this is declared, we will consider ourselves to no longer be bound by all the agreements we signed and to which we committed ourselves – all of them, with no exception.

[...]

"The number of refugees who were driven out of their homes... A refugee is not someone who was expelled from his country. A refugee is someone who was expelled from his home. [The figure is] 950,000 refugees. I remember that [in 2000], when we went to negotiate in Camp David, the Israelis said: 'There were 250,000 refugees, most of whom are dead, and we will see about compensations for the others...' No! The official figure in the UN's records is 950,000. A few days ago, I read in one of our media outlets that the figure was 800,000 or 850,000. No! It is 950,000."

New Jersey-Based Imam Taufique Aziz on Being Muslim in Non-Muslim Countries: Buddhist Monks in Burma Are Eating Muslim Children; We Cannot Take Jews and Christians As Friends, But We Must Respect the Laws in Their Countries

#7976 | 02:21
Source: The Internet - "The 5:2 Initiative on YouTube"

On April 14, 2020, a lecture titled "Muslims in the West" by Imam Taufique Aziz, the Imam of the Muslim Community Organization of South New Jersey, was uploaded to The 5:2 Initiative YouTube channel. In the lecture, Imam Aziz discussed several topics relating to living as Muslims in Western and non-Muslim countries. He said that Buddhist monks in Burma are killing Rohingya Muslims and their children, chopping them into pieces, and even eating them. On the topic of the COVID-19 pandemic, he said that the infidels in the West are unaware of basic principles of hygiene, but that these principles are central to Islamic practice, and he pointed out that Americans used to mock Muslim women for wearing the niqab, but that there are now places one cannot enter without covering one's face. Citing the Quran, Imam Aziz said that Muslims cannot take Jews and Christians as friends. He elaborated that it is forbidden to wish somebody Merry Christmas, but that Muslims are obligated to respect the law in non-Muslims countries, because visas, green cards, and passports constitute a sort of peace treaty.

Taufique Aziz: "Look at the Rohingya Muslims, Burma, these Buddhists killing them, chopping them into pieces.

[...]

"Peaceful Buddhist monks killing these Rohingya children, and some of them, how sick is their minds that they're chopping up Muslim children and even eating them.

[...]

"Oh, the most peaceful religion is Buddhism. Then why are you killing children and eating them? The monks are doing this.

[...]

"Look at this Covid-19. What's going on? This kafir society telling people, I mean, this is common sense, oh wash your hands with soap.

[...]

"Wash your private areas. Wash this. Take a bath. Clean yourself.

[...]

"This is our religion. A principle in our religion.

[...]

"These kafir are misguided, they didn't know.

[...]

"We have to show them the path.

[...]

"Look what they were doing, making fun of our sister who wear the niqab.

[...]

"They used to make fun of them, calling them terrorists.

[...]

"Well, now you have signs on stores. You are not welcome here unless you cover your face.

[...]

"They have no sense of right or wrong. They're just living more themselves, satisfying what's in their stomachs and what's between their legs.

[...]

"Do not take the Jews and Christians as your close friends. This is a command from Allah.

[...]

"We didn't come here to kill them wherever we find them.

[...]

"Preserve your Islamic identity.

[...]

"Oh, he's so kind. He's such a nice Christian. Uh... let me say 'Merry Christmas' to him. No, no, no. Doesn't matter how kind he is. You don't trim your religion. You be kind, have a nice relationship, but you don't sacrifice your Islam.

[...]

"What's a peace treaty in our day and age? The Visa, the Green Card, the American passport.

[...]

"You cannot help your Muslim brother against the kafir with whom you have a peace treaty.

[...]

"You find Muslims, they come here, they cheat the welfare system. They cheat the tax system. They cheat this. They cheat that. A Muslim commits a crime, he hides that Muslim and he will not expose him to the police or anything like that. All of that is haram in the sharia."

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani: We Have Scaled Down Our JCPOA Commitments, Are Willing to Re-Implement Them Fully If the Other Countries Do So as Well; U.S. Arms Embargo on Iran Would Have Dire Consequences

#7975 | 03:32
Source: IRINN TV (Iran)

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said in a May 6, 2020 address that aired on IRINN TV (Iran) that Iran has scaled down its commitments to the JCPOA in five phases and that things are now once again in a "state of balance." He said that Iran is ready to fully recommit to the JCPOA if the other member states do the same, and he emphasized that an extension of the U.S. arms embargo against Iran would constitute a violation of UNSC Resolution 2231, under which he said Iran has the inalienable right for the embargo to be lifted upon its expiry. Threatening that the implementation of an arms embargo against Iran in any way would result in the "severe consequences" that he said he wrote about in his 2019 letter to the heads of the remaining JCPOA member states, Rouhani said that any weapons Iran manufactures or buys are meant for defensive purposes and in order to "pour water on the fire" rather than to fuel it. In addition, he said that the U.S. should repent, apologize to the Iranian people, pay compensation, and re-implement the JCPOA, but that its current leadership does not have the brains to do this.

President Rouhani: "In five phases, we have scaled down [the JCPOA commitments] as needed. We are now in a state of balance once again. In other words, we withdrew from our commitments... America is irrelevant. It left [the agreement]. The "4+1" [states remaining in the JCPOA] have also withdrawn to a significant extent and now we are in a state of balance. At any time, if they are ready to fully implement their commitments to the JCPOA, we will also fully recommit.

[...]

"What the Americans are now talking about with regard to [extending] the arms embargo... They should know that this is an inseparable part of the JCPOA. If the arms embargo comes back one day - under any name or title, or as part of any mechanism - our response will be in keeping with what I wrote in the last paragraph of my [2019] letter to the heads of the [JCPOA member] states. They know full well what our response will be that day. In the last paragraph of my letter to the heads of the five [remaining member states], I emphasized that if X happens, we will do Y. They know how dire the consequences will be for them if they make this mistake and they know how colossal this historic defeat would be for them.

[...]

"I'd like to stress this once again, so that America and some other countries know: Under no circumstances will Iran accept a violation of [UNSC] Resolution 2231, according to which it is Iran's inalienable right for this embargo to soon be lifted. Obviously, whether we build weapons or buy weapons, they are meant to defend ourselves and [other] peoples. Our weapons do not add fuel to the fire. They pour water on the fire. We use these weapons to put out the flames. We do not allow any war to break out or for any tension to be created. America and other countries that this that the road is clear for their plots, should know that this road is forever blocked for them. The reasonable way is, of course, for America to repent, return to the JCPOA, apologize to the Iranian people, pay compensation, and implement [the agreement]. This is the best way. But the group that is ruling there today will not have the brains to do it. Let us see what will be in the future."
