Iraqi Caretaker Prime Minister Counters Mark Esper's Remarks: 'Letter Notifying Of The U.S. Withdrawal Is Formal And Considered Official Notice And Iraq Will Abide By It'

January 7, 2020
Iran, Iraq | Special Dispatch No. 8475
In a cabinet meeting held on January 7, 2020, the Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi told his cabinet that the United States does not see the Iraqi government as equal and is therefore willing to violate Iraq's sovereignty. The televised cabinet meeting[1] comes in the aftermath of conflicting news reports about a letter from U.S. Brig.-Gen. William Seely to the director of the Iraqi Joint Operations Task Force informing the Iraqi government that the U.S. would be "repositioning forces over the coming days and weeks to prepare for onward movement." The U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said that there are no plans for U.S. troops to leave Iraq, adding that some forces are being "repositioned inside Iraq." The Iraqi government provided another version of the story on January 6. Though it confirmed that it had received a letter from the U.S., it said the letter was not about repositioning of U.S. forces, but about withdrawal plans. The Iraqi Account Of The Letter In today's cabinet meeting, Abdul-Mahdi said his government "received yesterday a letter from the American leadership speaking about the withdrawal. When the letters arrived – at around eight o'clock, the Arabic translation of the letter contradicted the one in English. It was said that the letter was a mistake, however it clearly states a withdrawal from Iraq." He added that he immediately sent the letter to the Iraqi foreign minister and Iraqi ambassador in Washington and other parties. Doubling down on his insistence that he got a letter saying that the U.S. forces are withdrawing, he noted that the Arabic translation that arrived with the letter did not match the English, saying: "It was meant to say troops will reposition in order to withdraw from the country." He assured his cabinet that it was an official letter signed by U.S. Brig.-Gen. William Seely. He explained that nearly four or five hours later he had received another Arabic translation that matches the English. (source: Nasnews.com) The Relationship Between Us [U.S. And Iraq] No Longer Appears To Be Between Equals" Abdul-Mahdi acknowledged that there is a mistrust between the U.S and the Iraqi government that caused a confusion, adding: "The relationship between us [i.e., the U.S. and Iraq] no longer appears to be between equals." He said that the U.S. did not provide evidence of who launched the attacks on its troops in Iraq, and therefore it is hard for him to defend their position in reference to the U.S. airstrike that killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. Referring to U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper's statement on the letter, Abdul-Mahdi said that the Iraqi government did not receive an official written notification from the U.S. to clarify the situation. "Good, you say it was a draft, but it is a draft that we received. We – as a state – how should we act? So, let another letter be sent to us to clarify the situation so we can explain to our people or clarify the picture to us also. Not through talk exchanged by the media," he said. Abdul-Mahdi Seeks To Reestablish His Role As Prime Minister Abdul-Mahdi, who was forced to resign by angry protesters on November 30, 2019, over corruption and Iran's growing influence in the country, tried in the January 7 cabinet meeting to reestablish his authority as premier, saying he has a responsibility to abide by the letter that indicated U.S. withdrawal.   "My responsibility before my people, before you [cabinet members], before the Council of Representatives [i.e., parliament] means that we have to be clear about what we are talking about. But, if one time I take the talk seriously and, at another time, I say that the talk was a compliment, who can decide what the matter here is?" On January 5, U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, had dismissed Abdul-Mahdi's call for all foreign troops to leave, saying that the latter is only operating in a caretaker role.   [1] Youtube.com/watch?v=vgOJuccydDw&feature=youtu.be, January 7, 2020.

Responses On White Supremacist Platforms To U.S. Killing Of IRGC Qods Force Commander Qassem Soleimani

January 7, 2020
Iran | Special Dispatch No. 8474
The January 3, 2020 killing by the U.S. of IRGC Qods Force commander Qassem Soleimani prompted responses from white supremacist groups and individuals, who regularly comment on global issues. There have been two main types of response: mourning for an anti-U.S. and anti-Zionist figure, and support for or indifference to his killing since he was a) responsible for the deaths of U.S. soldiers and civilians, and b) a Muslim in a region far from the U.S. Also expressed was criticism of the U.S. government for the attack, on the grounds that it is fighting Israel's battles. The following is a review of reactions on white supremacist platforms and social media accounts: Support For Soleimani On January 5, the official Telegram channel of a white nationalist para-military organization posted an image of Soleimani with a message of support reading: "[we] would like to express our condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran for the loss of the great Major General Qasem Soleimani." On January 5, a white supremacist Telegram channel shared a pro-Soleimani post that was translated from the original Ukrainian and posted other white supremacist and neo-Nazi channels. The post states that the Jews had used the U.S. government and its Trump-administration puppets to kill Soleimani; it included his image and a list of his accomplishments: Organized 120 direct terrorist attacks on Jews. Commanded Hezbollah in a victorious war with Israel. He commanded the Iraqi militia in the battles against ISIL and Al-Nusra. Suleimani's quote about the Third Reich: "it was the last battle of the anti-Zionists of the West" Collaborated with Hamas, Hezbollah, Europe's Right. Quote about migrants flooding the Europe: "Untermensch, human dirt" Has organized several terrorist attacks on Americans in the Middle East." The post also includes a quote attributed to Soleimani: "The battlefield is a paradise lost to mankind, where morality and true human behavior are visible in their highest manifestation. Usually people's view of paradise is a breathtaking colorful landscape, creaking murmurs, beautiful women. But there is another kind of paradise – it's a battlefield" On January 4, the Telegram channel of a Ukrainian ultra-nationalist group posted images of their activists standing outside an Iranian embassy, likely in Kiev, where they left a portrait of Soleimani, a bunch of roses, and two notes to him. One of the notes read: "Your life was a war on globalism [...] Glory to Qasem Soleimani." The Telegram post also wrote that its activists had "honored the memory of the fallen general, Qasem Soleimani, under the Iranian Embassy. Soleimani noted the relentless fight against ISIL groups in Syria and Iraq. Qasem also played an important role in stabilizing the political situation in Iraq following the withdrawal of U.S. troops from there." On January 3, an anonymous comment was posted on 4chan in a thread titled "Qasem Soleimani – did he deserve it?" The comment referred to Soleimani as a hero: "He protected his country and others against Jewmerican/Israeli aggression. He's a hero." On January 6, a VK user referred to Soleimani as "a great hero!", and posted a screenshot of an anonymous 4chan thread titled "Let me tell you about Soleimani" that enumerated Soleimani's accomplishments: ">Responsible for over 120 direct terror attacks on Israelis ">Behind the propping up of Bashar Al-Assad, the Syrian tyrant ">Known ally of Russia and China ">Responsible for the deaths of over a thousand Saudi soldiers in Yemen ">Commanded Hezbollah in its victory over Israel ">Commanded Iraqi militias in their attacks against Sunni defence forces like ISIS and Al-Nusra ">Was caught on camera praising Hitler and the Nazi regime as "the last stand of the western anti-zionists" ">Known to have links to Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and the European far right ">Was caught on camera describing sunni migrants to Europe as 'subhuman filth.'" Comments to this post include the calls "RIP" and "EIP.. ZIEG Heil," as well as a smiley with a thumbs-up emitting a red and blue flame accompanied by an image of a burning Israeli flag. On January 6, this VK user posted another image of Soleimani with the text "General Soleimani. Anti-Zionism," writing: "A hero..." In a January 3 radio show on David Duke's website, Duke, co-host Patrick Slattery, and British white supremacist Mark Collett discussed Soleimani's killing in what Duke calls "a terrorist, murderous attack." Duke referred to the U.S. as "under the control of the Zionists," and in the article accompanying the show stated: "[O]ur Zio elites are convinced that they can blame anything and everything on Iran, and the goyim are too retarded to know any better. The irony... is that Trump is so vulnerable and flailing so pathetically that he may well wind up being removed from office over attacking Iran by the very people who want him to attack Iran." Image on David Duke's website, captioned "Rest in peace, Qasem, we miss you!" Support For And Indifference To Soleimani's Killing A Gab user posted, on January 7, a cartoon depicting Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei calling for "Death to America and Israel" both "Before" and "After" Soleimani's killing. He added: "Nothing's really changed, huh?" On January 3, also in the 4chan thread titled "Qasem Soleimani – did he deserve it?" a commenter said that Soleimani's killing was justified because of his link to the deaths of Americans in the Middle East, including the December 27, 2019 rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that killed an American contractor and the subsequent December 31 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. The comment stated: " He killed Americans on multiple occasions in a country of which they were officially welcomed in. If there were Americans in say... the UK and some other countries general launched an attack on them, do you think a response would be considered acceptable? Also, he was blown to hell while riding away with the group that had just attacked the U.S. embassy so it can easily be argued as justifiable. Media reporting per usual on this type of thing is grossly negligent and or deceptive/manipulative." An anonymous January 6 comment on a 4chan thread titled "What a fucking chad"[9] justified Soleimani's killing on the grounds that he was a Muslim: "he was islamic, fuck him and fuck allah."   [9] Boards.4chan.org/pol/thread/238575648. A "chad" refers to the "Virgin vs. Chad" meme; in this case it means that Soleimani is a strong, confident, nonconforming man.

Iraqi Shi'ite Militias: The American Embassy In Baghdad Is A Big Target; If Sanctions Are Imposed On Iraq We Will Stop The Flow Of Oil From The Gulf

print
January 7, 2020
The Iraqi Shi'ite militias continue to threaten revenge for the deaths of Qassem Soleimani, Commander of the Quds Force of the IRGC, and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, deputy head of the Iraqi Al-Hashd Al-Shabi (the Popular Mobilization Units, PMU) in an American drone strike, and in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's threats to impose sanctions on Iraq if it compels the American forces to withdraw from its territory. Deputy Secretary General Of The Al-Nujaba Movement: The American Embassy In Baghdad Is A Big Target; The Campaign Has Moved To The Arena Of The U.S. Allies In The Region Nasser Al-Shammari, Deputy Secretary General of the Iraqi Hizbullah Al-Nujaba movement, reported that an upcoming meeting is expected among the heads of the resistance factions in order to discuss a response to the deaths, and threatened that it would be directed against American allies in the region. Al-Shammari said: "Senior officials of the Iraqi resistance are planning to meet today or tomorrow to establish a united front against the American presence in the region. It would be beneficial if we, as factions of the resistance, formed a single entity to confront Washington, which defines us all in the same way [as terrorist organizations] ..."[1] He added: "Trump would not have dared to perpetrate this crime if it were not for the incitement  from 'Israel' and the Saudi rulers. As far as we are concerned, the American military presence is a target in Iraq. The American Embassy in Baghdad is like a military base and a den of espionage, there are thousands of Marines there and it is a very big target for the resistance. The campaign has now moved to the center of the countries which are Washington's allies in the region and agitate to attack us. The big result of the [shedding of the] blood of the martyrs will be the annihilation of Israel. The revenge for the blood of the martyrs will be shocking when the missiles fall on their heads."[2] Al-Nujaba insignia Hizbullah Brigades: We Will Destroy the American Air Force Base In Iraq Several senior militia officials responded to the threats made by Trump that the U.S. would impose sanctions on Iraq if it expels the American forces from its territory. Abu 'Ali Al-'Askari, the military commander of the Hizbullah Brigades tweeted: "If the stupid Trump imposes economic sanctions on Iraq, we will take action with our friends to prevent the flow of oil from the Gulf to America. With respect to the [American] air base [in Iraq][3] – it will be destroyed if [Trump] insists on remaining in Iraq. We are prepared to assist the Iraqi government to protect the activities of the Chinese companies."[4] Abu 'Ali Al-'Askari's tweet However, Hizbullah Brigades spokesman Muhammad Muhi subsequently clarified that the Iraqi factions will respond only after Iran retaliates. In an interview with the Lebanese Elnashra channel Muhi said: "The Iraqi resistance factions are an inseparable part of the resistance axis; they operate within its framework with due consideration for the political and popular situation in Iraq and the extent of the crimes perpetrated by the U.S. against the Iraqi people. We are waiting for the Iranian response... and then we will determine the character and breadth of our response..."[5]   [1] Almaalomah.com, January 6, 2020. [2] R-m-n.net, January 6, 2020. [3] In response to the decision by the Iraqi parliament about expelling the foreign forces from Iraq, President Trump said: "We have a very extraordinarily expensive air base that's there. It cost billions of dollars to build. We're not leaving unless they pay us back for it." bbc.com, January 6, 2020. [4] Twitter.com/abualiaalaskry, January 6, 2020. Putin: "The year 2020 is just around the corner. We are on the threshold of the third decade of the 21st century. We are living in turbulent, dynamic and contradictory times, but we can and must do everything for Russia to develop successfully, so that everything in our lives changes only for the better. In excited anticipation, we are awaiting the chiming of the clock, and we believe and hope that all our wishes will come true. "Our personal plans and dreams are inseparable from Russia. Our present and future, and the future of our children depend on the efforts and the contribution of each one of us. Only together will we be able to resolve the tasks facing our society and country today. Our unity is the foundation for achieving the loftiest goals. "These values were passed on to us by our ancestors, the heroic and unbending generation of victors. Next year, we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. With all my heart, I would like to extend my New Year greetings to battle front veterans and home front workers, people of the older generation who have gone through many trials for the sake of us all and the future of our Motherland. I bow down to you. "Friends, we always prepare for the New Year in advance and, despite being busy, we believe that the warmth of human relations and companionship are the most important thing. We strive to do something important and useful for other people and to help those who require our support, to make them happy by giving them presents and our attention. "Such sincere impulses, pure thoughts and selfless generosity are the true magic of the New Year holiday. It brings out the best in people and transforms the world filling it with joy and smiles. "Uplifting New Year's feelings and wonderful impressions have been living in us since childhood and come back every New Year, when we hug our loved ones, our parents, prepare surprises for our children and grandchildren, decorate the New Year tree with them and unpack once again paper cut-outs, baubles and glass garlands. These, sometimes ancient, but beloved family trinkets give their warmth to the younger generations. "Of course, each family has its own New Year traditions, but everyone is united by an atmosphere of kindness and care. May the happiness of mutual understanding be in your home forever, helping to overcome all difficulties and bringing different generations ever closer. May your parents be blessed with good health and always be the focus of your attention, and may each child know that he or she is the best loved ever. "Friends, New Year is knocking at our door. Let us wish each other and our Motherland peace and prosperity. "Happy holidays and a Happy New Year 2020!" (Kremlin.ru, December 31, 2019; watch the video) Christmas Greetings (Source: Kremlin.ru) On January 7, Vladimir Putin extended holiday greetings to all Orthodox Christians and all Russians celebrating Christmas. "On these festive Christmas days millions of people around the globe feel joy and inspiration, and a sense of following century-old traditions passed on from generation to generation. Their hearts are filled with love and a belief in the triumph of good and justice. "The Russian Orthodox Church and other Christian confessions in Russia play a highly constructive role in strengthening the moral and spiritual foundations of Russian society, preserving our nation's historical and cultural heritage, and educating young people. This is a large-scale and fruitful effort of great significance that deserves the most profound recognition. "I wish prosperity and good health to all Orthodox Christians and all Russian citizens celebrating Christmas." On that very day, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov held a telephone conversation with his American counterpart, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. In their conversation,"Lavrov stressed that targeted actions by a UN member state to eliminate officials of another UN member state, and on the territory of a third sovereign country without its knowledge grossly violate the principles of international law and deserve condemnation. "The Russian Minister pointed out that this targeted killing is fraught with grave consequences for the regional peace and stability, and will leads to a new round of escalation. Moscow urged Washington to give up 'illegal military actions to achieve its goals on the international arena and to settle all problems at the negotiating table," the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. On January 4, Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, at the latter's initiative. The ministers stressed that this US action was a grave violation of the fundamental standards of international law and does not contribute to resolving the complicated issues in the Middle East. They also added that this action will trigger a new round of escalation in the region. On January 4, Lavrov discussed the killing of Soleimani also with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron expressed their concerns in a phone call over the killing of Soleimani. "The two presidents wished each other a happy New Year. Both sides expressed concern over the death of Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force, who was killed as a result of a US strike on Baghdad's airport. It was stated that this attack could escalate tensions in the region," the Kremlin's website reported. (Polskieradio.pl, December 26, 2019) Russian Ambassador To Poland Andreyev: We Will Not Allow Anyone To Lecture Us After having a "harsh but diplomatic" discussion with the head of the Eastern Department, Andreyev said he stood by the president's statements as Russia's official position. "We will not allow anyone to lecture us. We have something to say ourselves, on the topic of politics of history," Andreyev told reporters after the meeting. "They allude to the propaganda messages of the Stalin's totalitarian era, already condemned even by a Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland wishes to remind the key facts of Polish foreign policy of the pre-war period and Poland-Soviet Union relations as well as the information on the Polish victims of Soviet repressions during the Second World War. "The Republic of Poland, which regained independence in 1918 after 123 years of captivity and exploitation by the partitioners: Austria, Prussia and Russia, adopted a consistent balanced policy towards both Germany and the Soviet Union. "The said policy resulted in Poland's efforts to sign a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union, which was eventually completed on 25 July 1932. Upon Soviet initiative, the pact was prolonged by ten years on 5 May 1934. "In the same manner, Poland strived to normalize its relations with Germany by means of the German-Polish Non-Aggression Pact of January 1934. "Despite the peaceful policy pursued by the Republic of Poland, the Soviet Union took direct steps to trigger war and at the same time committed mass-scale crimes. Under the order no. 00485 issued by the then People's Commissar for Internal Affairs in August 1937, 111,000 Poles, Soviet citizens, were murdered and several dozen thousand were deported or arrested (as part of the so-called Polish Operation of the NKVD). "USSR's actions were approved by the Nazi Germany. After first German claims against Poland made in January 1939, Soviet ambassador in Berlin Andrei Merekalov offered Germany political cooperation on 17 April. Notably, Hitler denounced the Non-Aggression Pact with Poland on 28 April. "The agreement was sealed by the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact signed in Moscow on 23 August and its secret protocol under which Eastern Europe was divided into German and Soviet spheres of interest. The protocol violated the independence of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Romania. "On 1 September, Germany launched its cruel military aggression on Poland. On 17 September, as agreed in the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Poland was attacked by the Soviet army, which violated the provisions of the non-aggression pact. At this very moment Poland was struggling against German troops and Polish government remained on the territory of Poland. The Red Army invasion violated international law and customs. On 28 September 1939, the Soviet Union signed another treaty with the III Reich, the Boundary and Friendship Treaty, which sanctioned the division of Polish territory between the two invaders. "Fifty two per cent of Poland's territory and 13 million of its inhabitants fell under Soviet occupation and were then subjected to mass repressions. In 1939-1941, at least 107,000 people were arrested and over 380,000 Polish citizens were deported deep into the USSR. "Following the decision of top USSR authorities, nearly all captured Polish army officers and numerous members of Polish elite, that is over 22,000 people, were shot in spring 1940 in Katyn, Tver, Kharkiv and other places of execution. "In 1940-1941, Soviet authorities carried out four major deportation operations from former Polish lands in February, April and June 1940 and in May-June 1941. The largest groups of displaced persons were sent to the Arkhangelsk oblast, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Swerdlovsk and Irkutsk oblasts, in the Komi Republic and Molotov oblast, and from April 1940 on in Kazakhstan. "USSR's repressions of Poles continued over the next years. From January 1944 until the end of 1940s, at least 85,000-100,000 Poles (other nationalities not included) were directly victimized on the former Second Republic territory. "A notorious example of Soviet repressions of Poles was a treacherous imprisonment of Polish deputy prime minister and fifteen other leaders of the Polish Underground State by the Soviet security service. Their show trial was held in Moscow in June 1945. They were sentenced to imprisonment and some of them were most probably killed in prison. "According to historians, credible calculations put the total number of victims of Soviet repressions from 1939 until after 1944 at 566,000 Poles (including all three categories: arrested, deported and murdered). An estimated 259,000 of Polish citizens, victims of repressions can be identified by name, using the sources available today. "The Polish side takes the view that the right path to follow in the Polish-Russian historical dialogue is to re-launch the Polish-Russian Group for Difficult Issues which has already had substantial achievements, such as the findings on the USSR's role in the outbreak of the Second World War. With his words, the President of the Russian Federation erased the joint effort of Polish and Russian experts, as well as the legacy of his predecessors, Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin, who – despite all the difficulties - struggled to find the way of truth and reconciliation in Polish-Russian relations. A reliable and critical look at history, instead of propaganda, would allow to pay tribute to millions of victims of Stalinist repressions, also on Russian side." "There are two ways: the first one is to learn from historic mistakes, the errors of the past and to draw conclusions and move forward, building the future and understanding history. The second way is to endlessly make one's future and the future of neighboring countries, regions and the world dependent on the interpretation of history and history in principle," Zakharova said. The "growing Russia-China-Iran trilateral convergence", as The Diplomat dubbed it in late December, is seemingly hitting a raw nerve in Washington: speaking to Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on 2 January, Rear Admiral Khanzadi, the Iranian navy commander, said that Washington and its allies had held an emergency meeting aimed at disrupting the drills. IRGC Commander-in-Chief General Hossein Salami: “The Muslims Will Leave No Spot Anywhere Safe for the Americans”

#7707 | 03:20
Source: Channel 1 (Iran)

IRGC Commander-in-Chief General Hossein Salami spoke at the funeral procession for Qods Force Commander Qasem Soleimani on January 7, 2020. He said that Iran will exact revenge and that it will be "hard and severe" and "the kind of revenge that causes remorse." He added that "the natural outcome of all of this is that the Muslims will leave no spot anywhere safe for the Americans." General Salami said that the Americans have set all their investments on fire with this "cowardly assassination." General Salami's remarks were met with chants of "Allah Akbar!" from the crowd. General Salami warned Iran's enemies that if they take another step, Iran will set the "place they love on fire" and in response, the crowd chanted: "Death to Israel!" The funeral procession was broadcast live on channel 1, Iranian TV.

Hossein Salami: "Let me start at the end: We shall exact revenge!"

Crowd: "Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar!"

Hossein Salami: "We shall exact revenge and it will be hard and severe, the kind of severe that causes remorse, decisive and final. You can rest assured. You can be calm.

[...]

"Today, in a miraculous way, the seed of hatred for America was planted in the hearts of Muslim and non-Muslim peoples. The natural outcome of all of this is that the Muslims will leave no spot anywhere safe for the Americans."

Crowd: "Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar!"

Hossein Salami: "We say to the Americans... We say to the Americans: You have set all your investments on fire with this cowardly assassination."

[...]

Hossein Salami: "Today and forever, the hearts are filled with hatred towards the Americans. This is the first necessary thing in order to form widespread struggle against the arrogance, until, inshallah, the world of Islam will be completely liberated from the evil of the devils and falsehoods. We say, once again: Our determination is strong. We say to our enemies: We will exact revenge, but if they take another step, we will set the place you love on fire."

Crowd: "Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar! Allah Akbar!"

Hossein Salami: "They already know what these places are. I won't go into detail."

Crowd: "Death to Israel! Death to Israel! Death to Israel! Death to Israel!"
