Saeb Erekat, Sec.-Gen. of PLO Executive Committee: The ICC Investigation of Israeli War Crimes Is Comparable to Neil Armstrong’s First Steps on the Moon; Arab Leaders Who Normalize Relations with Israel Are Shamelessly Stabbing Us in the Back

#7678 | 08:42
Source: Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar)

Saeb Erekat, the Secretary-General of the PLO Executive Committee, said in a December 25, 2019 interview on Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar) that the steps being taken by the International Criminal Court to investigate Israel for war crimes can be compared to the “giant leap for mankind” taken by Neil Armstrong when he first set foot on the Moon. He said that the legal proceedings are meant to bring about an end to Israeli injustice, occupation, and war crimes, and that there is no circumstance under which Palestinians could be labeled as terrorists since they have only acted in self-defense against Israel. In addition, Erekat said that Arab leaders who normalize relations with Israel, including those who have sent Hanukkah blessings to Israel, are shamelessly stabbing the Palestinian people in the back, and he emphasized that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is political and territorial rather than religious. Furthermore, Erekat said that 2019 was “the year of Palestine” because no Israeli official managed to speak a full lecture in any American or European university and because U.S. President Donald Trump’s extremism has “served the Palestinian cause” since his actions are made null and void by Congress. Claiming that Israel has undergone three election cycles in the past year purely because of the Palestinians, Erekat added: “Whoever wants to defeat extremism and terrorism in the region must start by draining the swamp of Israeli occupation… In our lifetimes, we will see an independent State of Palestine [with] East Jerusalem as its capital.”

Saeb Erekat: I believe that the recent steps [against Israel by the ICC] can be compared to the step made by Neil Armstrong when he set foot on the Moon for the first time in in 1969…

Interviewer: Wow…

Saeb Erekat: He said: “This is one small step [for man], one giant leap for mankind.” I don’t want to exaggerate in this regard, but the inability to achieve peace all these years – and we’re at the end of 2019 – has stemmed from the lack of accountability of the Israeli occupation.

[…]

In my view, this measure will not be the last, and things will not remain as they were in the past.

[…]

This is not about revenge. The idea behind the ICC [measures] is not revenge. It is meant to end the injustice, the violations, the occupation, the aggression, and the war crimes that are being committed without any accountability.

[…]

Interviewer: Let’s not forget that the ICC will also investigate what it describes as “Palestinian crimes,” just so we can complete our discussion of this…

[…]

Saeb Erekat: First of all, we are a people under occupation. The U.S. and Israel have tried to label Hamas a terrorist movement. Let’s talk honestly. They mustered all their power at the United Nations General Assembly, but President Mahmoud Abbas and the PLO, with all its factions, opposed this resolution, and we were victorious. Israel can file complaints. It filed one with the ICC against President Abbas. We have the ability to defend ourselves. We are a people under occupation, and we cannot, under any circumstances, be labeled terrorists.

[…]

I cannot guard anybody’s lips. Can I prevent any Arab decision-maker from going on his national TV network and declaring that he wants to normalize relations with Israel, and that he agrees that Jerusalem, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque are the capital of the State of Israel?

[…]

To normalize relations [with Israel] is to stab the Palestinians in the back. It is to lose one’s sense of shame. A shameless person does not stop what he’s doing when the Palestinians get upset. We, the PLO, recognized Israel. We strive for peace. We want peace, based on international law and the international legitimacy [of the U.N. resolutions].

[…]

Interviewer: But you don’t think that the chances for peace have diminished with this Arab-Israeli rapprochement? We have started openly congratulating Israel on the holiday of Hanukkah, and Israel is proud of this. It declares this out in the open.

[…]

Saeb Erekat: First of all, Judaism is not our enemy. We are not fighting Israel because of something written in the Torah. Our conflict is not a religious conflict. This is a political conflict about land, and against the settlements the state-sponsored terrorism, and the occupation. As Arabs, Muslims, and Christians, we are not against Judaism.

Interviewer: So you have no problem with an Arab country –and its leaders, officials, or embassies – congratulating Israel on Hanukkah? Is this normal in your eyes?

Saeb Erekat: I’m not saying that they should congratulate the Israeli officials, but if there are Jews in Egypt or in Yemen…

Interviewer: Hold on a moment… Let’s call a spade a spade. I’m not trying to fish in troubled waters, but let’s call a spade a spade. Tell me who… It was announced today that the UAE embassies in several cities congratulated Israel on Hanukkah. Is this normal?

[…]

Saeb Erekat: All I am saying is that this is not a religious issue. It is purely a political issue.

[…]

Mark my words. If Trump is re-elected, his second term will be the changing of the Arab regimes, because a person whose basic principle is that countries should be strong or find strong countries to protect them will never have enough, no matter how much these countries pay…

[…]

Interviewer: Is it that you don’t see any Arab-Israeli rapprochement, or is that you simply do not view it as a problem?

Saeb Erekat: No, I said that to normalize relations [with Israel] is to stab the Palestinians in the back and to sanction the spilling of Palestinian blood. We will not accept any change to the Arab peace initiative. The Arab peace initiative states that Israel must withdraw from all the occupied Arab lands – including East Jerusalem and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights – and that the refugee issue must be resolved on the basis of Resolution 194. [Only then] will we start normalizing relations. Netanyahu wants to turn the tables, but we say “No” to this a thousand times.

[…]

As I’ve told you, 2019 was the year of Palestine. No Israeli official managed to complete a single lecture in any American university, nor in any European university. Most European parliaments voted in favor of recognizing the State of Palestine.

[…]

Interviewer: Why was 2019 like that?

Saeb Erekat: Because of the dangers posed by the Trump administration. In Spain, for example, they don’t want to find one day that Barcelona has become the capital of the Catalan Republic simply because Trump got the right price. He has 40 million Irish voters in America. His main ally, Boris Johnson, does not want to find one day that Northern Ireland has joined Ireland… Countries are slaves to their interests…

[…]

Interviewer: So ultimately, Trump’s extremism has served the Palestinian cause?

Saeb Erekat: Yes!

[…]

Interviewer: Honestly, what Trump has done for Israel cannot even be described. Moving the embassy [to Jerusalem], cutting U.S. support for UNRWA, the Secretary of State’s declaration that the settlements are legal… I want to make sure I don’t forget anything… He equipped Israel with more F-35 planes, gave Israel the green light to annex the Golan Heights, and I don’t know what else… What else can he do? How can the elections affect the [Palestinian] cause?

Saeb Erekat: He wanted to implement the deal of the previous century, not the deal of the current century. The deal of the previous century consists of the Balfour Declaration, which called to establish a national home for the Jews, while protecting the civil and religious rights of the non-Jewish minorities in Palestine. This is what Trump has done with the support of the Anglican Church and Netanyahu, thinking that these measures would bring us to our knees. But we did not kneel and we remained steadfast, as we will in the future. The most important response to President Trump – even though he was rejected by the whole world – came from the U.S. Congress, on December 6, 2019. For the first time since 1948, the U.S. Congress voted – 226 against 188 – to confirm its support of the two-state solution, to confirm its support of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, and to confirm its objection to the settlements and the annexation. This was the greatest slap to Trump, who was impeached by the same Congress a few days ago. So if Trump is re-elected, what can he possibly do? All his measures are null and void. They do not give [Israel] any rights, and they are not binding. This is why the ICC issue is happening now.

[…]

Why is Israel going through three elections in 11 months? Are there any disputes about the economy? No. About social issues? No. About education? No. About religion? No. We are the reason. The Palestinians are the reason. Okay, they are an occupation force with 300 tanks, 1,800 airplanes, nuclear weapons, the support of the Congress, and so on – but what will they do about us? There is no solution other than ending the occupation, and establishing a Palestinian state in the 1967 borders, with Eastern Jerusalem as its capital, if they really want security, peace, and stability in the region. You cannot kill ideas with bullets, occupation, and settlements. Nobody can prevent ideas from spreading. Whoever wants to defeat extremism and terrorism in this region must start by draining the swamp of Israeli occupation.

[…]

In the 26 years that have passed since 1993, 600,000 Palestinians have returned from the east to the West [Bank and Gaza]. We are here to stay. We will remain here, and we will see, in our lifetimes, an independent State of Palestine, with full sovereignty over the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Fmr. Hamas Chief Khaled Mashal on the Role of Women in Palestinian Society: They Are Martyrdom-Seekers, They Help Martyrdom-Seekers, and they Replace Martyred, Imprisoned, Or Exiled Men

#7677 | 01:39
Source: Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar)

Khaled Mashal, the former Chairman of Hamas' Political Bureau, said in a December 20, 2019 speech that aired on Al-Jazeera Network (Qatar) that women play an important role in Palestinian society because they are martyrdom-seekers, they help martyrdom-seekers, and they take the places of men who have been martyred, imprisoned, or exiled. He emphasized that Hamas rejects the terms of the Middle East Quartet, saying that it is a matter of self-respect and having a strong identity. In addition, Mashal argued that the Islamic nation must not imitate the West and abandon its roots, saying that the Islamic nation will grow and be on the cutting edge of science, politics, and security while preserving its Islamic roots and culture.

Khaled Mashal: "The role of Palestinian women has become more important under the occupation. Palestinian women constitute 50% of the population, like in every other society, but they have two additional significant roles. The first role is struggling and resisting. The women are martyrdom-seekers, they help prepare martyrdom-seekers, and they play their role in the resistance. The second role they play is the role of [missing] men. They play the role of father, brother, and son. They fill the place of men who have become martyrs or who have been imprisoned or exiled.

[...]

"We decided to reject the terms of the Middle East Quartet. Others accepted these terms, but we decided... I asked some of the European officials: 'How many years do you need to test us to see if we meet the Quartet's terms? Ten years? We will not accept the terms of the Quartet!' Thus, the Europeans and others were forced to deal with us even though we did not accept the Quartet's terms.

[...]

"Some people confuse development and growth with living as somebody else. They believe that we cannot thrive unless we imitate the West or the East and strip ourselves of our identity."

'National Socialist Black Metal' Music Available On Telegram, Last.Fm, VK, Facebook, iTunes, SoundCloud, Spotify, Bitchute, YouTube

December 30, 2019
Special Dispatch No. 8445
National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM) music is widely circulated on many social media platforms, including Telegram, Last.Fm, VK, Facebook, iTunes, SoundCloud, Spotify, Bitchute, and YouTube. Several channels on Telegram share links to songs and ideological content in keeping with the genre's Nazi rhetoric. Links from Telegram channels are also posted to the video-hosting service Bitchute and to YouTube, which often removes this content. There is an overlap between Telegram channels that post NSBM and those that promote violence. Additionally, NSBM music festivals are promoted on these Telegram channels. The following report will look at platforms that host NSBM content. Some make it available at no cost, and others offer it for sale. NSBM On Telegram On October 28, 2018, the [redacted] Telegram channel published its first post. It says that it focuses on "true terror propaganda, hate literature and W.A.R. anthems by those who act. We will not appease the weak or coddle to any feeble scene tourists who try to ride along our superiority. The line has been drawn and you're standing on our opposing side. Expect death. Sieg Heil." A December 8 post features links to an NSBM song on YouTube and Archive.org that eulogizes American neo-Nazi terrorist Robert Jay Matthews, the leader of a white supremacist militant group who was killed in a shootout with law enforcement in 1984. On November 2, it promoted two websites that sell NSBM music. Another Telegram channel has 1,039 members and was created on March 24, 2019. Its first post read: "You're not welcomed here if you are not immersed in violent and extreme right- wing music. You're not welcome here if you are into violent and extreme music and are NOT active in right wing objectives. You will be snuffed out and ejected. To the few who are, welcome. To those who are not, FUCK OFF!!" On April 8, this channel forwarded two images of the front and back of a t-shirt featuring an image of an orthodox Jew with the caption "Israelite: Parasite." The shirt's back reads: "Minions of the poisoned race of David, Proselyte or blood born... None of you shall live. Shel Yad [Hebrew for "of the hand"] cut and tied to restrain your limbs. Shel Rosh [Hebrew for "of the head"] gag dislodges and cracks your teeth. Your forked tongue forced down into your throat muffling your shrieks, pleading and pain. Yiddish filth strands ripped from your skull, wrapped around your parasitic throat and used to hang from above. Your cries for help will go unheard not your broken and bleeding form is hung from split and separated neck... Bleeding and swinging from the rafters of your Semitic rat den abattoir."   An August 23 post encouraged followers to purchase NSBM music from specific music labels, that it listed at length. NSBM On Last.FM, SoundCloud, And Spotify The guidelines of Last.fm, which describes itself as the "world's largest online music service," read: "Be respectful to each other. Do not vent your frustrations at other members, whether through your comments or material you post on the site. There is zero tolerance for predatory behaviour, disparaging or defamatory comments, threats, harassment, illegal activities, invading privacy, propaganda, racial hatred, offensive cultural behaviour, vulgar or obscene content, or other inappropriate behaviour or the revealing of other members' personal information."[1] Last.fm gives "wiki" pages[2] that summarize different music genres, including a page dedicated to NSBM music featuring artists, albums, and tracks. The page describes the genre as "black metal that promotes National Socialist (Nazi) beliefs through their lyrics and imagery. These beliefs often include: White supremacy, racial separatism, antisemitism, heterosexism, and Nazi interpretations of paganism or Satanism. Some black metal bands have made references to Nazi Germany purely for shock value, much like some punk rock and heavy metal bands. The sound itself is different from normal black metal as well, with bands often incorporating ethnic music (as expressed in folk metal and pagan metal). NSBM does not fit into normal black metal or white power music circles. The genre was pioneered by the band Absurd in the 90's, who mixed black metal with oi! (noticeably in their early work) and political philosophies."[3] An artist page on Last.fm for an NSBM group An artist page on Last.fm for another NSBM group. SoundCloud appears to host fewer NSBM artists and songs. A search for notable NSBM band [redacted] returned 13 tracks. SoundCloud's Community Guidelines on hate speech clearly state that Nazi content not posted for educational or journalistic purposes "is illegal, and will be removed without discussion." The guidelines read: "SoundCloud allows for the presentation of individual beliefs and opinions. We do not, however, allow content that promotes or encourages hatred, discrimination or violence against others based on race, cultural identity or ethnic background, religious beliefs, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. We will use our discretion when necessary to determine if beliefs or opinions incite hatred. Please keep in mind that applicable laws state that Nazi and ISIS content is illegal, and will be removed without discussion, unless clearly used for educational or journalistic purposes."[4] Spotify also hosts NSBM content, including a playlist featuring 93 songs, as well as songs from various NSBM bands. Spotify's Terms and Conditions of Use state: "Spotify may, but has no obligation to, monitor, review, or edit User Content. In all cases, Spotify reserves the right to remove or disable access to any User Content for any or no reason, including User Content that, in Spotify's sole discretion, violates the Agreements. Spotify may take these actions without prior notification to you or any third party. Removal or disabling of access to User Content shall be at our sole discretion, and we do not promise to remove or disable access to any specific User Content."[5] NSBM On Apple's iTunes Store In 2018, Apple swiftly removed content from fringe commentator Alex Jones, stating that "they do not tolerate hate speech, and we have clear guidelines and creators and developers must follow to ensure we provide a safe environment for all of our users." Nevertheless, Apple's iTunes store sells many tracks by NSBM bands.   NSBM On VK The Safety Guidelines for the Russian social media platform VK includes a section on reporting inappropriate or questionable content: "If you encounter threats, insults or harassment, or some other threat to your safety, inform us by using the 'Report' button. This button can be found in various types of content, such as posts, comments, photos, videos and stories. You can also contact Support and report a profile or community that contains content that you think is illegal, offensive or suspicious. We review all reports without exception. "VK has a very large moderation team that responds as quickly as possible to all reports we receive. Our response time is never more than an hour and is usually a matter of minutes. Our team removes content that breaks the VK Terms of Service or the law and blocks communities and profiles used by scammers to spread such content. VK uses a very effective hybrid method of moderation. We respond to reports from users, government regulatory agencies and social organizations, as well as conduct proactive internal monitoring. Our automatic search and inappropriate content removal mechanisms are constantly improving. One example of this is our use of digital fingerprints to quickly locate harmful information. This allows us to prevent the quick distribution of fake news, as well as illegal or offensive content. We also respond to requests from the regulatory body, Roskomnadzor, in accordance with the laws of the Russian Federation."[6] A community on VK that disseminates NSBM music has 137 members and over 1,300 posts, which are mainly in Russian. NSBM On Facebook Many NSBM bands have Facebook pages. For example, [redacted band name's] Facebook page has nearly 16,000 "likes." A page for an annual NSBM music festival has nearly 3,000 followers. NSBM On Bitchute Bitchute, which hosts a great deal of racist and antisemitic content, also hosts NSBM music.  Bitchute hosts many albums by the NSBM band [redacted]; its content is categorized under Nationalistic/European Music on the platform. NSBM On YouTube YouTube hosts NSBM songs, including many organized into playlists titled "NSBM." Several videos of performances at NSBM music festivals have also been uploaded onto YouTube.   [1] Last.fm/help/guidelines, accessed December 20, 2019. Reactions In Iraq To The Recent Violent Conflagration – Hizbullah Brigades: 'Trump Will Pay A Heavy Price In Iraq And In The Other Countries Where His Criminal Forces Are Found'; U.S. Bases Will Be Crushed

December 30, 2019
Iraq | Special Dispatch No. 8447
In the past 24 hours, tension between the U.S. and the Iran-supported Iraqi Shi'ite militias, headed by the Hizbullah Brigades, has peaked, following yesterday's U.S. aerial attacks on five Hizbullah Brigades positions in Iraq and Syria. The Hashd Al-Sha'bi – the Popular Mobilization Units, or PMU – announced that over 25 of its members had been killed, among them Abu Ali Khazali, commander of a battalion of its 45th Brigade.[1] The U.S. attacks came after the December 27 rocket attack on the K1 military base near Kirkuk in northern Iraq, which houses U.S. and coalition forces and which killed a U.S. civilian contractor and wounded several U.S. service members. This was the worst and most recent of several rocket attacks on bases in Iraq at which U.S. troops are stationed. Some of the attacks were against a complex in Baghdad's Green Zone where the U.S. Embassy is located and where diplomats reside. To date there has been no claim of responsibility for any of these rocket attacks, although at one point Iraqi security forces announced that they had killed "three terrorists" who had fired rockets, but did not announce their identities. The U.S. has said that the rocket attacks are being carried out by the Shi'ite militias, headed by the Hizbullah Brigades, which have in the past year threatened several times to harm U.S. interests which, they say, are within range of their weapons.[2] The Hizbullah Brigades' response to the U.S. attack came quickly. Elements in the organization warned that "[President] Trump must know that he will pay a heavy price in Iraq and in the other countries where his criminal forces are found" and that "our forces are ready to crush the bases of the American occupation." Other PMU-member militias also threatened retaliation against U.S. forces in Iraq. It should be noted that it was reported that immediately after the U.S. attack, four Katyusha rockets were fired at Camp Taji, a base north of Baghdad where American forces are also deployed.[3]  Iraq's political echelons condemned the U.S. attack; members of Parliament representing the militias even called for "eye for an eye" retribution. Hizbullah in Lebanon also condemned the attack; an announcement by the organization stated that "there is no escape from the fact that those who made the decision to carry out this criminal act of aggression will soon discover the stupidity, results, and ramifications of this decision."[4] It is also notable that Iran's response to the U.S. attack has so far been low-key, conveyed by low-level officials, despite the fact that the Hizbullah Brigades are Iran-backed and are subject to its authority. The damaged Hizbullah Brigades outpost. (Source: Nasnews.com, December 29, 2019) This report will review the statements in response to the U.S. aerial attack by Iraqi Shi'ite militias, members of the Iraqi parliament, and Iran. Statements By The Iraqi Shi'ite Militias Hizbullah Brigades: The Only Option Is Conflict; We Are Ready To Crush The U.S. Bases Several hours prior to the U.S. attacks, the Hizbullah Brigades issued an announcement stating: "The evil American crows carried out a premeditated attack on our sons defending our western borders, in violation of Iraq's sovereignty and of its people's honor. In light of this heinous crime, the Hizbullah Brigades leadership calls on the military and security forces, as well as on the popular national forces, to prepare to open a new page of heroism and self-respect and to expel the oppressive American occupier from our sacred land."[5] Photo accompanying the announcement. The Hizbullah Brigades intelligence division said in a statement: "We are in a state of alert and are holding ongoing meetings  to discuss how to respond appropriately to the attacks... Our battle today with America and its mercenaries is currently open to all options. Our only choice is conflict. There is no consideration that will prevent us from responding to the crime of striking the defenders of the homeland from among the sons of the PMU. [President] Trump must know that he will pay a heavy price in Iraq and in the other countries where his criminal forces are found."[6] Hizbullah Brigades military commander Abu Ahmad Al-Basri warned: "Our forces are ready to crush the bases of the American occupation and to crush their rotten heads. We await instructions."[7] Ja'far Al-Husseini, the Hizbullah Brigades military spokesman in Iraq, told the Lebanese Hizbullah television channel Al-Manar: "The leaders of the resistance factions are meeting to discuss the response to the attacks. All options are on the table; we await orders from the leadership regarding the response to the aggression. There will surely be a suitable response. The Americans have already been attacked by the Iraqi resistance. Our resistance capacity has increased tenfold.[8] PMU Deputy Commander: The Response Will Be Harsh As stated, the PMU militias also warned of a brutal response to the U.S. attack on the Hizbullah Brigades. PMU deputy commander Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis vowed that the blood of the dead and wounded would have been shed in vain, adding that there would be "a harsh response against the American forces in Iraq."[9] Asa'eb Ahl Al-Haq: We Must Confront The U.S. Forces In Every Legitimate Way The Asa'eb Ahl Al-Haq militia condemned the U.S. attack and called for expelling the American forces in "every legitimate way." A statement it issued in Arabic read: "The ongoing American violations of Iraqi sovereignty necessitates a brave and determined stand against the unrestrained behavior that is evidence of the barbarity and arrogance of the U.S. administration, its disregard for the security of the peoples, and its aspiration to destabilize secure countries. These attacks are a continuation of the previous attacks carried out by the Israeli enemy against PMU positions, and prove that the enemy is [united] on one front. "Therefore, we call upon the national political forces to unite against this cowardly aggression, to move past their disagreements, and to act to overcome the obstacles and crises that allow America to interfere so blatantly in Iraq. We believe that the American military presence has become a burden for the Iraqi state, even a source of threat and aggression against our forces and our security apparatuses. It is thus incumbent upon all of us to confront it so as to expel it in every legitimate way, before it further threatens the security and stability of our beloved Iraq."[10] Al-Nujaba Movement: The Banners Of The Mujahideen Will Fly Over The U.S. Fortresses In a statement, the Al-Nujaba movement said: "The Great Satan, with its oppressive army and oppressive tools, has added another crime to its list of deadly crimes, with its attack on the mujahideen of the PMU and the Islamic resistance deployed on the border to defend the homeland from ISIS, which was created by America, the epitome of evil. [This Satan – that is, the U.S.] has boldly claimed responsibility for this aggression against the regular forces of the Iraqi state... [Addressing the U.S.:] You will see from us things [i.e. operations] that will bring down your flag and thwart your plans... Your encounter with the mujahideen is nigh, and then their banners will fly over your fortresses, that you thought would protect you..."[11]  The statement In Iraqi Political Echelons, Calls To Speed Up Law To Expel U.S. Forces From Iraq Iraqi political leaders condemned the U.S. attack, but in a diplomatic and restrained manner. Iraqi President Barham Salih informed to the U.S. attache in Iraq that the attack had violated the two countries' bilateral agreements and harmed Iraq. The spokesman for outgoing prime minister Adil Abd Al-Mahdi said that the attack had harmed Iraq's sovereignty, which could harm security in Iraq and the region.[12] Parliamentary speaker Muhammad Al-Halabusi also said that the attacks had harmed Iraqi sovereignty, but called for restraint and for adherence to the guidelines of the Iraqi armed forces' commander in chief – that is, the prime minister. He also called for preserving the security of the diplomatic representations and the international coalition forces, including the Americans, on Iraqi soil.[13] Iraqi MPs Representing The Shi'ite Militias: Pass A Law Expelling U.S. Forces From Iraq, Respond "Eye For An Eye" In contrast, members of parliament representing the Shi'ite militias called for not settling for a diplomatic response but also  for "responding eye for an eye – and even more"[14] and reiterated the calls for a law expelling the U.S. forces from Iraq. MP Falah Al-Hazali, of the Al-Fatah Alliance which includes PMU militias, called the U.S. attack a continuation of that country's crimes in Iraq and a significant challenge to Iraq's stability. He said: "The Americans have not learned their lesson from their defeat in Iraq. They must go back to the archives and history to see what the resisting Iraqi people did to them, when it turned its soil into a graveyard for [the U.S.] occupying forces. There must be a national stand against the ongoing damage to the PMU and to [Iraq's] security forces. Parliament must pass a law expelling the foreign forces, including the Americans, from Iraq. Anyone thwarting [the passage of such a] law is collaborating with the Americans..."[15] MP Hassan Salam, of the Al-Sadiqoun parliamentary faction, which is the political arm of Asa'eb Ahl Al-Haq, called the attack an absolute violation of Iraqi sovereignty reflecting contempt for Iraq's security. He said that the goal of the U.S. attacks was to prevent the PMU forces from operating against ISIS, which according to him is sponsored by the U.S. and Israel. Calling on the Iraqi government, security apparatuses, air forces, and military air force "to distance themselves from the language of diplomacy and condemnation and respond 'eye-for-an-eye and even more," he added that "the political factions and parliament must stop the dithering and quickly pass a decision to expel the American forces from Iraq..."[16] Iran's Reaction As noted, although the Hizbullah Brigades are supported by Iran, Iran's official response was low-key, and was delivered by low-level representatives who focused primarily on condemning the U.S. attack. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Sayyed Abbas Moussavi condemned the U.S. aggression on Iraqi soil and against the PMU positions, and called on the U.S. to respect Iraq's sovereignty and its territorial integrity and to stop interfering in its internal affairs. He added that the attacks proved that the U.S. was supporting ISIS and called on it to take responsibility for its "illegal actions" and to end its occupation of Iraq.[17] Government spokesman Ali Rabiei denied that Iran had been involved in the attacks on the K1 base, calling the claim that it had been "baseless" and no justification for the U.S. bombings and killings. He warned that "these careless operations" would only fan the flames of hatred of the U.S. occupation and would exacerbate the insecurity in the country.[18]   [1] Almehwarnews.com, December 29, 2019.
