An editorial in Issue 223 of the Islamic State (ISIS) weekly Al-Naba', released online on February 27, 2020, claimed that coronavirus outbreaks in Shi'ite cities are a reminder from Allah to the Shiite "polytheists" to abandon their doctrine and "to turn to Allah in repentance." The outbreak in the Iranian city of Qom, claimed the editorial, was due to Shi'itism being a "false" Islamic creed, and that the outbreak "in a city that houses one of [the Shi'ites'] most sacred shrines and their religious schools and grand clerics" (i.e. Mashhad, Iran, home to the Tomb of Shia Imam Ali Al-Ridha) proves that Shi'ite ideology is sinful.
An earlier Al-Naba' editorial discussed the coronavirus outbreak in China, stating that while it is permissible to celebrate the hardship experienced by "polytheists," the article disagrees that the virus is evidence of Allah punishing China for its persecution of Muslims. The February 27 editorial, titled "Those Whom You Call Upon Vanish, Except For Him," similarly described Shiites as "polytheists", quoting several Quranic verses, and claimed that Shi'ites prefer to seek salvation from the family members of Prophet Mohammed, than from Allah himself.
The editorial then mocked those Shiites who "forgot that the same idols which they are asking people not to visit, due to fear of disease, and the tombs which they are now covering with disinfectants to prevent contamination [...] are the same idols and tombs people were once expected to visit when requesting favors or ease for their troubles."
Continuing the argument that Shi'ites are "polytheists," the author writes: "If Allah cursed [the Shiites] with disease, they will still visit the tombs and shrines of their Imams [and] circle them as if they are circling the Kaaba." The virus "is perhaps a reminder from Allah" of the "blindness [of Shi'ites] and [of the] insolence of their minds." The editorial concluded: "[It is a] sign for some of them to abandon polytheism and to believe in the oneness of Allah."
The editorial was accompanied by an image appearing to depict an Iranian man disinfecting a sacred tomb.
