Neo-Nazis And White Supremacists Debate Orania And Afrikaner Ethno-State In South Africa: "A Flower In A Sewage Dump"

Orania is a whites-only community founded by Afrikaners in South Africa. The town was established in 1991 in South Africa's northern Cape province, after the abolition of the apartheid system. The founders of Orania hope to grow larger and become an independent white Afrikaner nation, or "Volkstaat." As of 2022, the reported population of the town was 2,500. Discourse on Orania and the concept of "whites-only" communities has grown more popular, fanned by comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk in February 2025, on a controversial South African land seizure law. The law allows the government to seize land without compensation. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the bill into law in late January 2025.

Online, neo-Nazis and white supremacists have discussed Orania extensively with many white South Africans; many express their support for the whites-only town. The following report will provide an overview of support for, and opposition to, Orania from neo-Nazis and white supremacists online.

Kentucky-Based Fascist Fighting Group Visits Orania; Neo-Nazis And White Supremacists Praise "Volkstaat" Orania

On February 22, 2025, the X (formerly Twitter) account for a fascist fighting club posted a photo of one of its members posing with a club flag in front of Orania. The caption of the photo reads: "[We] visited Orania in South Africa to gain a deeper understanding of how Whites can form intentional communities. Our members swapped skills and built relationships with members of the Afrikaner community."

On X, a white supremacist account posted a clip from a British white supremacist's online show. The clip argues that if the government were to create a "white nation," modeled on Native American reservations in the United States, white people would create a self-sufficient utopia. The account wrote, "Something to think about. Orania in South Africa is a perfect example of how this will likely unfold – a self-sustaining, prosperous, safe and high-trust community."
