March 3, 2025

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Dresden bombing during World War II, neo-Nazis across the world published commemoration posts honoring the victims, claiming the attack was an "actual holocaust" and genocide, and calling the Allied Forces war criminals and the villains of World War II. Allied forces bombed Dresden on February 13-15, 1945, destroying much of the city.

In 2023, MEMRI reported on the anniversary of the Dresden bombings, and in January 2025, MEMRI covered the neo-Nazi framing of the attacks as Allied war crimes.

This report will review extremists' posts across the social media platforms X (formerly Twitter), Gab, and Telegram, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Dresden bombing.

Neo-Nazis Call Dresden The "Actual Holocaust" And A "Genocide"

A neo-Nazi X user posted on February 15 comparing the deaths in the wake of the Dresden bombing to the deaths of Jews in the Holocaust. The neo-Nazi claims "6 million Germans died in the Firebombing of Dresden" and "if you disagree, you should go to prison for denying the Dresden Holocaust." The post mocks those who criticize Holocaust deniers, claiming the Holocaust never happened, or that the number of deaths is exaggerated, and European laws that criminally penalize Holocaust denial. The full caption of the post reads: "6 million Germans died in the Firebombing of Dresden. I know this because of the pictures of piles of bodies everywhere and peoples first hand accounts. If you disagree, you should go to prison for denying the Dresden Holocaust."

In 2008, the city of Dresden formed an independent historical commission specifically to study the toll of the Allied bombings, and concluded that approximately 25,000 civilians lost their lives in the attack.

On X, another neo-Nazi user posted a colorized image of Dresden, before the bombing, with the caption: "The Allied Bombing of Dresden was the real Holocaust of World War II."

A Spanish neo-Nazi posted photographs of the bombing of Dresden and its aftermath on February 13, 2025, on X, in commemoration of the anniversary of the attack, calling it a genocide. Their post read: "Today is the anniversary of the genocide perpetrated by the Allies against the German city of Dresden during the Second World War and that was populated with refugees, women, and children. A war crime that should never be forgotten, where 300,000 civilians were murdered."

Neo-Nazis Claim Allied Forces Were Villains of World War II

On X on February 14, an American neo-Nazi posted an aerial photo of the rubble in Dresden, blaming Jews for the destruction of the city, framing the Allied forces as the villains of World War II, and falsely claiming that the Allies were the first to intentionally target civilians. The post read: "Weird how your history teacher never taught you that the ALL-lies were the first to start targeting civilians during WWII. In fact, the Zionist drunkard, Winston Churchill, was the one who ordered the firebombing of Dresden, Germany. The same people blowing up Gaza, did this."
