Telegram Channel Announces Jihadi Fundraising Campaign To Defend Rebel-Controlled Areas In Syria, Gives WhatsApp Numbers

On May 31, 2019, Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham's (HTS) Ebaa Agency published an article describing Telegram and warning users of its risks. The risks it mentioned included that Telegram accounts are established through a message sent to a telephone number, allowing telephone companies and governments to intercept the message and create a clone of the account, and that the app's software is not completely open-source, forcing users to rely on the developers' encryption, unlike messaging apps such as Riot and Wire. The article warned users, particularly the mujahideen fighting Russia, the native country of the app's developers, not to use Telegram for sensitive communication.
