Telegram Channel Affiliated With Iran-Backed Iraqi Militias Threatens Drone Attack On Saudi Arabia

December 1, 2022

On November 25, 2022, a Telegram channel which supports Iran-backed militias in Iraq published an animated video implicitly threatening a drone attack on Saudi Arabia. The video depicted a phalanx of drones with the Quranic verse: "Whoever then acts aggressively against you, inflict injury on him according to the injury he has inflicted on you" (Quran 2:194).

The video was posted with following comment: "We, the sons of Zayd bin 'Ali [a martyr in Shi'ite Islam], the sons of the Arabian Peninsula and the occupied Hijaz, are waiting for an order from the leadership to turn it upside down... The knights of the desert carry the Yemeni dagger. My commander will avenge [Lionel] Messi [a reference to Argentina's recent loss to Saudi Arabia in the FIFA World Cup]."
