On March 30, 2021, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) Telegram channel published a warning addressing supporters in Europe, urging them not to use the fingerprint or face recognition functionality offered by their smartphones, and instead to lock their phones with a six to eight digit PIN. The post claimed that authorities in Europe are now permitted to force individuals to unlock their phones, so long as it is locked with a fingerprint.
The channel also urged readers to make use of a well-known VPN service, avoid untrusted ones, remove SIM cards from their devices, use fake phone numbers, and avoid using Facebook and its services, such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and others.
