On May 13, 2022, a pro-Islamic State (ISIS) Telegram channel specializing in documenting the group's activity in Sinai published a post on a ministerial meeting of the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, held in Marrakech, Morocco on May 11. The channel reported that one of the topics being discussed was the group's growing numbers in Africa, and its improving military technology in the region, including the use of drones.
Noting that this was the first time such a meeting took place in Africa, the channel said, its goals were to "stop the Muslims [ISIS] in Africa, East Asia, and Afghanistan, and to prevent their resurgence in Iraq and Syria. Participants allegedly voiced their fears over the growing scope and danger posed by ISIS in Africa. The channel claimed they concluded that "all the armies in the world are insufficient to cover the desert of Niger, not to mention the swamps, forests, and deserts" where ISIS is active.
