Pakistani Security Services Use Telegram To Track, Raid Peshawar ISIS Militants Communicating With ISIS In Afghanistan

November 9, 2017

On November 7, 2017, it was reported that Pakistani security forces were able to conduct a raid on a group of Islamic State (ISIS) militants outside of Peshawar because of the group's use of the encrypted messaging app Telegram: One member of the group had shared a photo of a location that security forces were able to identify. After learning that their communication was being tracked by Pakistani security services, they tried to shift to another encrypted app called Signal, but were raided on June 24, 2017. According to the report, the ISIS militants had been trained to use Telegram in Afghanistan, and were using it to share information about potential targets, primarily with their group in Afghanistan.
