On August 8, 2016, Softpedia reported that Afzal Faisal, a known Pakistani hacker who has defaced many Indian websites, was being sought by Indian security agencies for compromising the network of a local bank. Authorities claimed that Faizal had breached the website of an unnamed Indian bank, reaching its e-payment system.

Faizal uses the handle Faisal 1337, and is associated with Team Pak Cyber Attackers. He claims he has hacked over 1,000 Indian websites on behalf of Pakistan. Most of the hacks are simple pro-Pakistan defacements. Faizal has increasingly targeted government website, most infamously having defaced the websites of seven Indian embassies around the world in June. This included India's embassy in Ankara, Turkey; Athens, Greece; Mexico; Bucharest, Romania; and Dushanbe, Tajikistan, as well as India's Consulate General in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and the High Commission of India in Pretoria, South Africa. He has also defaced the websites of police stations and government agencies.

Pakistan and India routinely hack each other on their respective independence days on August 14 and 15.

On August 13, 2016, it was reported that the bank that had been hacked was "Canara Bank," and that the hack had occurred on August 2. Faisal defaced the bank's website by inserting a malicious page, and tried to block some of its e-payment services. The defacement read "Government of India website stamped by Faisal 1337. We are a team of Pak Cyber Attackers. Go Home Kiddo. Need Security? Contact me: www.facebook.com/Pakistan1337. Pakistan Zindabad." It was also reported that the Reserve Bank of India wrote a confidential letter and advised the bank chairmen to review funds stored in their foreign accounts and carry out hourly reconciliation payment emails by comparing outward messages with SWIFT confirmations. Officials said that Faisal failed to access any type of data. cjl818 Source: news.softpedia.com, August 13, 2016
