Online Jihadi Brings Forward The Importance Of E-Jihad In The Muslims' Fight Against Their Enemies

October 4, 2011

On June 18, 2011, a thread titled "Haqiqat Al-Jihad Al-Iliktruni Wa-Alyatihi" ("The Truth of the Electronic Jihad and Its Tools") was posted on the Shumoukh Al-Islam Internet forum. The thread, written by Abu Maysara Al-Gharib, whom little is known about, presents the topic of e-jihad, while arguing that, it, similar to the physical form of jihad, plays a crucial role in the Muslims' fight against their enemies. The author describes how intertwined and connected the field of e-jihad is with other forms of jihad, such as the physical, financial and intellectual jihad. He then provides different outlets for e-jihad such as website hacking, malware (i.e. computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, etc.) distribution, and building jihadi websites and jihadi-related online propaganda.

Abu Maysara says that similar to the mujahideen on the battlefields, e-mujahideen have an important auxiliary role in aiding their Muslim brothers. E-jihad resembles in many ways other forms of jihad, says Abu Maysara, since it aims to "confront the enemy [of Islam] in order to defend Islam's creed, identity, sacred places, land and nations."

Abu Maysara says that e-jihad has a tremendous potential in "creeping up" on the masses [both Muslim and non-Muslim], in the aim of aiding the Muslim Ummah and exposing its enemies.

Therefore, Abu Maysara says, "Electronic jihad has become an available tool in the hands of many Muslim men," thus, "Any Muslim who intends to [use] electronic jihad against the enemy, is considered, in one way or another, a [true] mujahid."
