On August 17, 2017, it was reported that the Facebook page of the UK online newspaper The Independent had been hacked by an Iraqi social media personality. The hacker, who identified himself as Mahmood Jumaa, took over the newspaper's Facebook page after midnight on Thursday, August 17, in order to promote his social media accounts and increase his following. The page's profile picture was replaced with an image of an Iraqi flag and a post was made on the page in Arabic. Jumaa also shared a live video on the page and bragged about the hack on his Instagram page.
