Iranian Hackers Target Albanian Government In Cyber Attacks, Leak Documents About Attempted Jihadi Assassinations Of Kosovo Prime Minister, Politicians

September 22, 2022

Between September 15-19, 2022 Iranian hackers carried out a series of cyber attacks on several Albanian government systems, who then listed sensitive citizen and government data for sale on a Telegram channel called "Homeland Security."[1]

The channel posted numerous documents, emails, and memos between Albanian politicians and public figures, including documents revealing foiled plans by jihadis with ties to Syria to assassinate Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and other politicians, in an effort to destabilize the country.

Albanian Prime Minster Edi Rama commented on the cyber attack, saying: "Based on the full assessment made in cooperation with the super teams of Microsoft and other American agencies, the attack was a massive assault to wipe out completely our digital infrastructure together with all related data. It didn't succeed, and damages were far less than one would fear after such a blow."[2]
