On August 30, 2023, a Syrian opposition website reported that Iran-backed militias recently turned an archeological site in Al-Mayadin, Syria into an intelligence base run by Lebanese Hizbullah. According to the report, the militias installed dozens of security cameras around the site, which is also being used to store weapons and missiles, and serves as an airfield for drones. The report featured a short video of the site taken from a moving vehicle.
