The Salafi-Jihadi Challenge in Libya: Part I: Online Jihadis Respond to Collapse of Qadhafi's Regime

With reports of the Libyan rebels' advance on Tripoli and their siege of the compound of Libyan leader Mu'ammar Al-Qadhafi, online jihadis and Al-Qaeda sympathizers made noticeably greater efforts to respond to and analyze the unfolding events. Two main themes dominated the initial responses in the online jihadi sphere: the need for Islamists to seize the moment in Libya and establish a clear and undeniable presence in the country, and calls to be wary of the agenda of the Libyan Interim Transitional National Council (ITNC) and its chairman, Mustafa 'Abd Al-Jalil, whose agenda the online jihadis consider pro-Western and aimed at establishing a democratic regime once Qadhafi's regime is toppled.
