Online Jihadis Celebrate 12th Anniversary Of 9/11

September 11, 2013
Special Dispatch No. 5442

As in past years, online supporters of global jihad celebrated the 12th anniversary of Al-Qaeda's September 11, 2001 attacks on the U.S., using the event for their propaganda efforts. They boasted of Al-Qaeda's success in striking the U.S., posting photos and videos of the attack, photos and biographies of the hijackers, quotes by Osama bin Laden, and the like.

The following are examples of these celebrations, from social media and jihadi forums.

9/11 Poem - "Obama, Do You Remember The 11th [Of September]?"

The Shumoukh Al-Islam jihadi forum posted a 9/11 poem written by "The mother of the martyr Adam Al-Mejjati," a Moroccan woman named Fatiha Hosni whose husband, Al-Qaeda member 'Abd Al-Karim Al-Mejjati, was killed together with their son in Saudi Arabia in 2005:

"Obama, [if] you convert to Islam you will be saved... and if not, we will pray the evening prayer

"At the place of [September] 11 [i.e. Ground Zero]

"The day of heroism and glory

"The day of catastrophe and victory

"The day your people sipped the poison of humiliation and oppression."

"Obama, do you remember the 11th [of September]?

"Manhattan, a fragment of hell, the stronghold of usury, was vaporized

"The Pentagon was ripped from its foundations

"The blood spilled

"Flesh was blown all over

"Bones were broken

"The American dream was shattered

"The army of Osama [bin Laden] was victorious."

"Obama, do you remember the 11th [of September]?

"[When] the arrogance [of the Americans] collapsed and retreated

"The world was shocked, its mouth agape

"The eagle on your crest fled like a terrified mouse

"The stars on [your] accursed flag fell off

"The Statue of Liberty committed suicide [out of] terror."

"Obama, do you remember the 11th [of September]?

"When the leader [George Bush] hid underground

"And later threatened...

"And dragged the Arabs and non-Arabs after his cross towards the greatest grave

"Where your armies suffered humiliation, killing, and capture...

"Bush went and [you] too will go, and with Allah's help Mullah Omar [the spiritual leader of the Taliban] will remain."

"Obama, do you remember the 11th [of September]?

"The day your bastions were destroyed by martyrs whose faces are [now] a moon fragment...

"Whose blood smells of musk...

"As revenge for the blood of our women and children...

"You will have no peace until we have it in Palestine, Iraq, Syria, and Egypt

"[Until] the banners of monotheism fly over the White House, the Elysee Palace, the Duma, and over every castle."

Jihadis Celebrate On Social Networks

Some Facebook pages, such as this page run by Tunisian Salafis, posted an image of a cake celebrating the 9/11 attacks:

Many jihadi Facebook accounts, such as Ghaza Al-An - Shamel (Gaza Now), a page administered by jihad supporters from Gaza, posted collages of photos of the World Trade Center towers burning, with a caption that quoted a popular jihadi hymn: "America and its hangers-on will not forget our laughter as the tower went up in flames. Today is an anniversary on which Allah gives glory to the believers and humiliates the polytheists."

Jihadis used social networks to circulate videos commemorating the hijackers, such as a YouTube clip featuring bin Laden's eulogy for the hijackers.

Jihad Al-Umma, a popular Facebook page that aggregates news and information from various jihadi sources, posted photos and biographies of hijackers Muhammad 'Atta, 'Abd Al-'Aziz Al-Zahrani, Ziad Al-Jarrah,  and others.

On Twitter, jihadis tweeted triumphant statements aimed at glorifying the attacks and Al-Qaeda and portraying a menacing image for the organization.

For example, Abu Al-'Aina Al-Khurassani, a well-known figure in the global jihad movement and until recently an administrator of the Shumoukh Al-Islam forum, wrote:

"[9/11] is the day in which America's nose was rubbed in the dirt. A day in which Allah gave glory to the monotheists and humiliated the infidels and polytheists...  With a reinforcement of pride, self-sacrifice and resistance, the mujahideen outlined the path of light, glory, self sacrifice and resistance for every monotheist Muslim who rejects submission and the life of humility and degradation."

A jihadi who calls himself Abu Dujana Al-Shami posted on his Facebook account a photo of the burning World Trade Center and wrote: "Osama the lion, the herald ahead of us. His position is firmly situated in a paradise that shall not desist in the face of the decisions that crowned oppression and tyranny"

Many jihadi Twitter users tweeted icons of planes and symbols resembling the World Trade Center towers:
