Militant Organizations Reviving in the Jihadist Hub of Punjab
By: Tufail Ahmad*

During the summer of 2011, a series of Pakistani media reports originating from the intelligence agencies in Pakistan highlighted how the outlawed Islamic militant and extremist organizations are thriving in Punjab, a Pakistani province known to be a safe hub for militants. Recent media reports have also revealed that major terrorist organizations in the province such as Jaish-e-Muhammad are reviving their activities.

On August 26, 2011, Shahbaz Taseer, son of slain Punjab governor of Punjab Salman Taseer, was abducted from Lahore, the provincial capital of Punjab. His brother Sheryar Taseer disclosed that their family had been receiving threats from the Taliban and other Islamic extremist groups ever since Governor Taseer was shot dead earlier this year for urging reforms in Pakistan's blasphemy laws.
