Following are images of violence in Karachi, the economic capital of Pakistan, where scores of people have been killed in recent weeks in recurring ethnic/linguistic violence in which all political parties have been involved. The major parties include the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Awami National Party (ANP), and Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
Supporters of these parties are accused of killing rival political activists in targeted
killings, leading to a cycle of reprisal arson attacks and looting. The MQM represents Urdu-speaking immigrants who came from India, the ANP represents Pashtun migrants from the Pakistani tribal region, and the ruling PPP has its main support base in Sindh province, of which Karachi is the capital.
