August 19, 2014
Special Announcements No. 325

As a reader of MEMRI, you are familiar with our continuing efforts to monitor more media sources in more countries, research more subjects, and translate into more languages. We would like to ask you if you could kindly make a tax-deductible donation to MEMRI for 2014. Your donation to our Summer Campaign is vital in helping MEMRI meet its financial obligations.

Your Donation Helps Us Bridge The Language Gap Between West And Middle East

In our previous emails to you, we’ve highlighted how your generous donation will help support MEMRI’s work in bridging the language gap between the West and the Middle East and in producing primary source translations and unique analyses that enable government, law enforcement, legislative bodies, academia, the media, and the public to gain a more in-depth understanding of the complexities of the Middle East and South Asia. Our work and research were recently praised in a July 9, 2014 op-ed by former CIA director and MEMRI Board of Advisors member Michael Hayden; he wrote that MEMRI is "an independent nonprofit that has built quite a reputation tracking traditional and nontraditional media in the Middle East and South Asia...the MEMRI logo is often visible on the B-roll video of major news networks."

Research And Updates On The Gaza War

Since the war in Gaza began on July 7, 2014, MEMRI research efforts have produced over 45 Special Dispatches and more than 70 MEMRI TV clips, which have been viewed over 3 million times on www.memritv.org and on MEMRI's YouTube channel; additionally, 15Inquiry & Analysis and 40 reports from the MEMRI Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor Project (JTTM) have been published. MEMRI has provided research to Members of the U.S. Congress, including Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce, whose committee helped introduce and pass legislation regarding Hamas' use of human shields in Gaza. MEMRI research was instrumental to numerous features in the media, from CNN to The Washington Post, and many others. MEMRI also launched a Gaza War page featuring all of our research on this topic. Additionally, MEMRI research has been continuously followed by the Israeli government, the IDF, and Israel's Foreign Ministry.

MEMRI's Impact This Summer

The following are some highlights of the impact that MEMRI coverage has had this summer:

Press Release On House Resolution Includes MEMRI TV Translations

MEMRI continues to assist the federal government: On July 30, 2014, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.Con.Res 107, which denounced the use of civilians as human shields by Hamas and other terror groups, and had over 100 co-sponsors. The press release on the passage of the legislation included MEMRI TV translations of top Hamas officials calling for their own citizens to be used as human shields (see House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce's (R-CA) floor speech on the resolution).

CNN's Wolf Blitzer Challenges Hamas Spokesman With MEMRI TV Clip

MEMRI research was used by CNN's Wolf Blitzer in his on-air challenge to Hamas spokesman Osama Hamdan over the latter's statement, captured in a MEMRI clip that Blitzer screened, that "it is a fact" that "the Jews used to slaughter Christians, in order to mix their blood in their holy matzos." Hamdan replied that "the Israelis and MEMRI" had "cut the facts and start[ed] this propaganda... to cover the genocide which is happening in Gaza now..." The clip was later re-aired on two more CNN programs.

MEMRI TV Clip Of Sheikh In Italy Calling For Killing Jews Gets Him Expelled From Country

A MEMRI TV video released August 4, 2014, showing a sheikh in a Friday sermon in Italy calling on Allah to "kill [the Jews] to the very last one" led to his expulsion from Italy the following day. Italian and other media – including The Washington Post – reported on the expulsion of the sheikh, noting that the video clip of the sermon had been published by MEMRI and including excerpts from it.

MEMRI TV Clip Of Antisemitic Berlin Imam Prompts German Police To Launch Investigation

A MEMRI TV clip showing an antisemitic sermon by a Berlin imam led German police to launch an investigation into the imam's activities as well as into the growing antisemitic sentiment in the country. Since the clip's release, the imam's statements have been reported on worldwide.

Your Donation Will Allow Us To Continue Our Work And Increase Our Output

Your donation will allow us to increase our output and to add to the more than 5,000 print media translations, 1,000 analysis reports, and 4,000 translated TV clips (including more than 16,000 minutes of translated content) that we have produced to date.
