In recent months, the Twitter account @Wahabism has tweeted a series of satirical comments about the meaning of Wahabism, or Wahhabism, explaining how the Wahhabi ideology has become a source of bloodshed across the Islamic world, especially when followed by Sunni jihadi organizations. This tweeter is also active on Facebook under the handle "/shia.pen" and its posts also link to Urdu-language content.
The Twitter account links to Shiapen.com, a website registered by someone in London, according to domain registration details obtained from Whois.ws.[1] From the website pages, it emerges that Shiapen.com functioned previously as Answering-Ansar.org.[2] On its "About Us" page, it notes: "Shia Pen is a volunteer project, which is undertaken by members from around the world. Our sole goal is to refute the false propaganda against Shia and the teachings of Islam."[3] There has been war of words between Shiapen.com aka Answering-Ansar.org by Sunni group Sunnidefense.com, with the former being accused of "deceptively propagating" Shia beliefs.[4]
The Twitter account @Wahabism symbolically lists Saqifah in Saudi Arabia as its location. As per Shia understanding, the tribal chiefs of Madina met at Saqifah after the Prophet Muhammad's death and selected Abu Bakr as the first caliph of Islam, thereby denying the position to Ali ibn Abi Talib who is seen as the rightful claimant. This issue of succession is the main source of conflict between Shia and Sunni branches of Islam.
