September 24, 2013
Africa, Somalia | Special Dispatch No. 5457

According to media reports, among the perpetrators of the terror attack on the Nairobi mall are British and American nationals.[1] The presence of Westerners among the members and supporters of the Somali jihad organization Al-Shabab Al-Mujahideen, which perpetrated the attack, is well known. MEMRI has reported on a number of Americans who fought in the organization's ranks, some of whom were killed while fighting in Somalia. The most prominent of the American Al-Shabab members was 'Omar Al-Hammami, aka Abu Mansour Al-Amriki, who apparently joined the group in 2006 and rose to become one of its top commanders, before having a falling-out with the group and reportedly being killed by Al-Shabab members in September 2013. MEMRI has also reported on Zachary Adam Chesser, a Virginian convert to Islam who is serving a 25-year prison sentence in the U.S. on terrorism-related charges, including a charge of aiding Al-Shabab.
