Two leading Iranian dailies recently published articles promoting conspiracy theories against the West, particularly against the U.S. The daily Jomhouri-ye Eslami stated that the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are an operational wing of the U.S. and Britain, and the daily Kayhan stated that the "American-Zionist empire" had caused the earthquake in Haiti.
Following are excerpts from the articles:
Jomhouri-ye Eslami: Al-Qaeda and the Taliban Were Founded and Are Operated By the West
The Jomhouri-ye Eslami article, published January 5, 2010, stated that the Taliban and Al-Qaeda were established by the U.S. and Britain with funding from Saudi Arabia and the UAE. It stated further that the recent attacks perpetrated by these organizations – namely the Christmas Day bombing attempt and the attack on the CIA in Khost – were ordered by the Americans and the British so as to provide them with a pretext for launching a new war in Yemen and Afghanistan. The paper pointed an accusing finger also at Yemen, for welcoming this foreign intervention following its unsuccessful attempts to fight the Houthi rebels, which are supported by Iran:
"British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made the first step towards the internationalization of the war in which Yemen is spilling the blood of the Shi'ites [i.e. the Houthis] in Sa'da [province, in northern Yemen], by seeking to convene an international forum in London on January 28, 2010, with the aim of [examining] the role of the West... in the war in Afghanistan and Yemen... so that the U.S., the EU, and the Persian Gulf countries would discuss [these matters] together.
"The Yemeni government, which in the course of its depraved oppression of the [Yemeni] Shi'ites realized that [the war] was beyond its capabilities, welcomed the British plan, and expressed hope that mobilizing international capabilities in order to support Yemen [in its fight against terrorism] would allow it to fight unemployment [in the country] and to alleviate the effects of the poverty [in the country, that has produced this terrorism].
"It is either the height of naïveté or of [self-]deception on the part of Yemen's government to think that the entry of power-hungry [nations] into backward countries will bring the latter relief, security, stability, and employment, and will clean out poverty...
"Three interlinked events are happening simultaneously:
"a) The Western media is conducting a propaganda campaign with regard to the dubious incident on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight, saying that the one responsible for the incident is a fellow named 'Umar Farouq, a Muslim resident of Nigeria, who allegedly had undergone terror training in Yemen. With these dubious reports, the CIA is trying [to convince the public] that there should be a focus on suppressing Al-Qaeda in Yemen.
"b) At the same time, the CIA is claiming that seven CIA officials were killed in a terror attack in Khost, Afghanistan, including the regional base's commander and deputy commander, and is accusing the Taliban of responsibility for the deed.
"3) In the framework of this same dubious [campaign], the commander of the U.S. forces in the Middle East, Gen. David Petraeus, spoke of the U.S.'s focus in Yemen and noted that Washington is planning to increase aid to Yemen's military. He said: 'In the past year, the U.S. has allocated $70 million for suppressing opponents of the Yemen government; this sum will be doubled in the new year.' [This sum] surely does not include the secret aid that the U.S. provides to the Yemen [government].

"The link connecting the [above] three items, which [only] appear to be unconnected, is Obama's official announcement that Yemen has become a refuge for Al-Qaeda leaders and a center for planning terror attacks, and that there is a great deal of evidence that the agent [i.e. the Christmas Day bomber] was trained in Yemen by Al-Qaeda in order to attack Flight 253 to the U.S."
"Whenever Washington Needs Some Incident... to Justify Its New Plans, the Hands of the Al-Qaeda and Taliban Leaders Suddenly Emerge from their Sleeves to Carry Out Acrobatic Terror Operations"
"There may be some who do not understand Washington's goals and plans in its false propaganda campaign... But an examination of the background of the establishment of the Taliban and of Al-Qaeda leads to the clear conclusion that they are two terror organizations created by the CIA, and established in cooperation with the English and Saudi intelligence networks, with generous funding from Saudi and UAE oil magnates.
"Although in recent years the U.S. has reiterated that it [heads] the front of the fighting against the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, it never concealed or [gave us reason to] doubt that it played a pivotal and founding role in establishing, guiding, and supporting the Taliban.
"If we recall that this sinister relationship exists... we will understand that the Taliban and Al-Qaeda still operate, surprisingly, as 'the operative branch of the U.S.' Whenever Washington needs some incident or special terror operation to justify its new plans, the hands of the Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders suddenly emerge from their sleeves to carry out acrobatic terror operations in Afghanistan, Pakistan, the heart of Europe, and even above the Atlantic Ocean.
"We can understand Obama's announcement in the same way... He said: 'This is not the first time this group [i.e. Al-Qaeda] has targeted us. In recent years, they have attacked us several times, and killed our citizens. We see this planned incident [on Flight 253] as proof that there is a need to reexamine U.S. national security, and in particular to strengthen our partnership with the Yemeni government, training and equipping their security forces, and sharing intelligence with them.'"
"The scent of a new war wafts from this announcement; it also reveals Washington's efforts to foment crisis in a new spot, in Yemen. Furthermore, the parallel announcement by London reflects the effort to internationalize this crisis at the first opportunity...
"Ultimately, Washington and London are on the lookout for a pretext [that will justify] their involvement in the issue in Yemen, [and they are doing this] by means of these dubious reports regarding Taliban and Al-Qaeda activity..."[1]
Kayhan: The U.S., Zionists Caused Haiti Earthquake
In a January 21, 2010 article, the daily Kayhan stated that "the American-Zionist empire" was responsible for both the recent cold wave in the northern hemisphere and for the earthquake in Haiti. Citing unnamed scientists, it claimed that both events were caused by a sophisticated weather-controlling device called HAARP, which is used by the empire to weaken and defeat its enemies around the world. The daily speculated that the purpose of the quake was to enable the deployment of U.S. forces in Haiti, with the ultimate aim of plundering this country's oil reserves and also occupying nearby Cuba and Venezuela:
"America caused the earthquake in Haiti by means of its secret weapon HAARP. According to the Alterinfo websites... many scientists around the world think that the Haiti earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale, was caused by the HAARP weather device. Using this secret weapon, the American-Zionist empire caused [the recent] wave of extreme cold [in the northern hemisphere] in order to undermine the efforts of the [activists] worldwide who oppose global warming, and also caused the devastating earthquake in Haiti, so as to deploy its warships in the Caribbean Sea, with the ultimate goal of occupying Cuba and Venezuela. Another group of scientists, who also accuse the U.S. of using the HAARP weapon, believe that Haiti's oil reserves, which are no smaller than Venezuela's, were the motivation for [causing] the earthquake and [then] quickly occupying [Haiti].
"Stressing that the U.S. undoubtedly used the HAARP weapon against Haiti, these experts quoted Zbigniew Brzezinski, an advisor to former U.S. president Jimmy Carter and currently an advisor to Obama, who described HAARP as a weapon [used to] destabilize countries that are not allies of Washington. According to him, 'this technology provides the superpowers with the means to instigate wars, quickly and by surprise, without their military forces being aware of [what is happening].' He added: 'We have the ability to create climate changes, including drought and tornados, and this can weaken the enemy and force him to accept our conditions...'
"Experts have been asking themselves how a strong earthquake like the one in Haiti could have struck such a limited area, leaving nearby regions like the Dominican Republic completely unaffected and without even causing a tsunami. [They have also been wondering how it is that] not a single prominent expert in North America or the Caribbean [Islands] warned in the media that a [catastrophe] of this magnitude was about to occur.
"Now the U.S.'s naval forces have occupied Haiti and its central bank, which is a center for laundering money in this country. Since they arrived in Haiti, the American forces have not allowed a single volunteer to enter the country. They have been impeding the [efforts] to help [its] people and have been taking over the [aid] initiatives of other countries, including France...
"The HAARP system is a 'weather weapon' which discharges an exceptionally [powerful beam of] energy into the ionosphere, and by setting the molecular frequency [of this beam]... it can be used to create [climate] disruptions in specific areas, including drought, rainfall, snowfall, extreme cold, tsunamis, tornados, earthquakes, etc. This weather weapon is in the hands of the military and industrial masters of the world..."[2]

In a discussion on the Iranian English-language Press TV, 'Abdul 'Alim Musa, imam of the Al-Islam Mosque in Washington DC, made similar claims. He said that Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden were friends of the U.S., and that 90% of the attacks attributed to Muslims were carried out by and/or with the help of the Israeli Mossad and the U.S. government while accusing Islam, with the aim of stopping the growth of the global Islamic movement and justifying the occupation of Islamic lands. Also, in his January 4, 2010 column in the Syrian government daily Al-Thawra, Ahmad Sawa raised questions about who was behind the Christmas day bombing attempt, particularly in light of the fact that the bomber had managed to get past sophisticated security procedures.
