Following are excerpts from an interview with Abd Al-Sattar Al-Meligui, former member of the Egyptian Shura Council and a Muslim Brotherhood member. The interview aired on Al-Tahrir TV, Egypt, on April 3, 2012.

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: I am convinced that the funds used by my dear brother Khayrat Al-Shater were donated or collected as dues from the Muslim brothers for da'wa. Both the sharia and the law prohibit using these funds for private investments.

Interviewer: This is a serious accusation…

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: No, it's the reality. To begin with, there is no…

Interviewer: He takes money that was donated for da'wa for himself, and invests it?!

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: He has a fatwa to that effect.

Interviewer: Fatwa by whom?

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: He gives his naïve followers the impression that Islamic law permits this.

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: I have records of all the roles assumed by Khayrat Al-Shater. He failed at all of them. He failed in his private affairs. He did not attain a Ph.D., and did not become a member of the teaching faculty at his university. He was dismissed. He failed in his private affairs because he could not earn enough for his family, before joining the Muslim Brotherhood. He failed in his private affairs because his children curse the Muslim Brotherhood in the newspapers on a daily basis.

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: He collected lists of names and addresses of Muslim Brotherhood members, and due to his neglect, these lists were seized by the State Security Agency. I was one of those who preceded him in this administrative position, and I did not leak a single word or document. I challenge the State Security Agency to say they could get anything out of me. Then, [Al-Shater] gave them all the documents in one go.

Interviewer: On purpose or due to neglect?

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: This was neglect and failure, attesting to the character of this person.

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: He met [U.S. Senator John] McCain to receive orders from him.

Interviewer: But the General Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood met McCain before Al-Shater…

Abd Al-Sattr Al-Meligui: The General Guide also receives orders. He is much weaker than Al-Shater.
