Former Tunisian President Marzouki: The Egyptian Regime Uses the Same Violence as the Argentinian Dictatorship in the '70s

In a recent TV interview, former Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki said that the Egyptian regime was perpetrating the same kind of violence that was employed by Argentinian generals in the 1970s. Like in Latin America, he said, "ultimately, the dictatorship will be destroyed." The interview aired on September 16 on the Muslim Brotherhood Al-Sharq TV channel, which broadcasts from Turkey.

Following are excerpts:

Moncef Marzouki: Unfortunately, we do not learn anything from history, or else we would have… I always say that if any director were to read the books of history, he would not perpetrate such stupid acts. I advise the Egyptian regime to read the history of the military coups in Latin America in the 1970s. If you look at what happened in Argentina and Chile in the 1970s, you will see exactly what is happening now in Egypt. What will happen in Egypt in the next 30 years is what happened in Argentina since 1970… Ultimately, the dictatorship will be destroyed. When you examine the extremity of the violence used by the regime against the Egyptians, you see the same kind of extreme violence used by the Argentinean dictatorship against the Argentinean people. You may not know this, but the generals in Argentina would throw opposition members alive out of helicopters, in order to spread fear. [All] these dictatorships use the same violence in order to spread fear. Ultimately, however, after 2-30 years… The generals who perpetrated these crimes in Argentina are standing trial today.
