Turkish PM Davutoglu Prior to Recent Elections: We Will Never Permit Any Change to the Islamic Character of Jerusalem

At a rally held in Mersin, Turkey on May 9, prior to the recent elections, Turkish Prime Minister Davutoglu said: "As long as the Taurus Mountains do not collapse, as long as the Mediterranean Sea does not dry up, and as long as the skies do not fall, we will never permit any change to the Islamic character of Jerusalem!"

Following are excerpts:

Turkish PM Davutoglu: The crescent on our red flag is the symbol of our freedom and monotheism. In December, we went to Skopje, Macedonia, our brothers there said: “Honorable Prime Minister, please send us [Turkish] flags.” I said to them: “You, the sons of conquerors, you, the brave migrants from Konya and from the Taurus Mountains, we are sending our red flag, a holy Quran and a Turkish dictionary to every home in Europe."

[…]

Which party is the one that waves this red flag in Asia, Africa, and Europe? Which party? Which party? Which party?

[…]

Like the heroic Turks, Kurds, and Arabs in Saladin’s army – shall we be the model of justice in the Middle East and throughout the world? Let the co-chair of the HDP [Kurdish party] hear this. Let him hear this from Turkmens, from Kurds, and from Arabs. He says that Jerusalem is the holy place of the Jews. People of Mersin, to whom is Jerusalem holy? It is ours! It is ours! It is ours! Will you teach a lesson to this ignorant man, who says that Jerusalem is the holy place of the Jews? Will you put him in his place? You, brave Turkmen, Kurds, and Arabs – will you proclaim that Jerusalem is our holy place? As long as the Taurus Mountains do not collapse, as long as the Mediterranean Sea does not dry up, and as long as the skies do not fall, we will never permit any change to the Islamic character of Jerusalem! Can the skies fall? Can the Taurus Mountains bend their knees? Can the Mediterranean Sea dry up? Therefore, our faith can never dry up. Our religion and tradition will never kneel.

On the other side [CHP Chairman] Kılıçdaroğlu says: “Why don’t we have an ambassador to Israel?” In order to understand why there is no ambassador to Israel, you do not have to think very hard. It is enough to think of the Mavi Marmara. You do not have to know where it is, but think about Al-Aqsa. That is enough. Once again: we shout from Mersin: Heroes and sisters, do you approve of the government of the Turkish Republic, which stands steadfast against the cruel oppressors? Shall we continue to stand up against the oppressors? Shall we continue to defend the oppressed? Do not look toward these [political leaders]. Kılıçdaroğlu does not know a thing about Jerusalem.

[…]

We will defend the oppressed, wherever they are. Shall we defend Jerusalem? Are those who own Palestine here? Are those who own Sarajevo here? Are those who own Samarkand and Bukhara [in Uzbekistan] here? Are those who own Kirkuk and Halabja [in Iraq] here? Are those who own Hasakah [in Syria] here? Dear people of Mersin, these elections are not only for Turkey. These are elections for the Middle East, for the Balkans, for the Caucasus, and for central Asia. The votes you cast will affect not only our fate in Turkey, but the fate of our brethren in all these regions as well. Will you give us this vote?
