During an interview on the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen TV channel, Syrian MP Sharif Shehadah broke down in tears. "Life in Syria was better than in Switzerland," he said, before being visibly moved to tears. The interview aired on September 9, 2015.

Following is an excerpt:

Sharif Shehadeh: The Syrian regime did not kill or torture people. Let me tell you, life in Syria was better than in Switzerland. I thank you for mentioning that your teachers in Kuwait were Syrians, as were the workers, the doctors, and the engineers. The country of [poets] Nizar Qabbani, Sulaiman Al-Issa, and Al-Maghut can only be a civilized country. This attack is not directed only against Syria…

Interviewer: Excuse me, Sharif… Sharif… Mr. Sharif Shehadah is obviously moved. We appreciate this, because we are witnessing on TV is difficult for any Syrian. It is hard on any human being in the world, let alone on someone who is a native of that country. Your tears are dear too, Sharif. By Allah, you made us cry too.
