In a TV interview, Egyptian military analyst Brig.-Gen. (Ret.) Mahmoud Khalaf said that the Iranians were "swindlers, liars, and cheats" and that if Egypt was threatened by Iranian ships, "We will sink them before they even come near us. No big deal."

Following are excerpts from the interview, which aired on the Egyptian Sada Al-Balad TV on April 1, 2015.

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Mahmoud Khalaf: Throughout its history, Persia has employed taqiya. In other words, the Iranians are swindlers, liars, and cheats. They are the biggest liars. They lie about everything. They employ taqiya, pretending to be miserable.

Interviewer: Let's say, for the sake of argument, that the Iranians suddenly feel like coming over…

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Mahmoud Khalaf: Coming where? How exactly? On a plane? On a boat? On camles?

Interviewer: No matter how…

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Mahmoud Khalaf: Do you mean that they will be coming straight to me?

Interviewer: Let's assume that they come to the ports…

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Mahmoud Khalaf: Which ports?

Interviewer: They show up at the ports of the Red Sea and threaten us…

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Mahmoud Khalaf: We will sink them before they even come near us. No big deal. It's no big deal. That's why I am laughing. They will never get near us.

Interviewer: So they can't get to our region?

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Mahmoud Khalaf: Not them, nor a more powerful force. Anyone who comes in peace is welcome, but if not, they shouldn't come at all.

Interviewer: Can't there be a naval confrontation?

Brig.-Gen. (ret.) Mahmoud Khalaf: What?! I swear by Allah, our navy will tow their ships. Our navy knows what I am talking about. Our navy will not sink them. It will tow them. In order to annoy them, it will tie their ships and tow them, and then place their ships on display at the Alexandria naval base. What are you talking about? Does [Iran] have a real navy? Their navy is no match…

They keep showing you how good they are: more and more long missiles… Well, I saw a video showing them welding barrels together and writing on them.

Khomeini erased the Iranian army. I used to have Iranian colleagues at the military college here, back in the day. They were top notch, and the Iranian army was a real army in the days of the Shah. But the Iranians completely destroyed this army and established the IRGC. The IRGC that you see today are mere militias. That's it. They want to put on a show of force in the Gulf. Whenever I watch this, I sit and laugh about those rubber launchers, and all the speedboats going left and right… Where are their vessels? Where are their naval tactics?
