Sermon in Montpellier, France: Women Are Selfish by Nature, Deny the Good Bestowed on Them by Men

In a Friday sermon delivered in the Aicha Mosque in Montpellier, France, Imam Mohamed Khattabi said: "No matter how much good you bestow upon a woman... Her selfishness drives her to deny it." The sermon was delivered on March 8 and posted on the Internet.

Following are excerpts:

Mohamed Khattabi: It was Islam that enabled women to raise their heads high. Fathers would marry their daughters off without consulting them. They would treat them like merchandise. They would marry them off or force them to divorce, and the daughters had no say in the matter. The daughter had no right to express her choice, to say whether she agreed or not. This was the case until the Prophet Muhammad said: "Her silence means consent."

When a maiden is offered a husband – her silence means consent. This means that she has the right to have an opinion. Islam has granted her the right to speak up, to say if she accepts or rejects the offer. If she is silent, it means that she was too embarrassed to say "yes." If she had objected to the match, she would have said "no," because she would not want to marry someone she did not like. Thus, she is spared the need to say "yes" in front of her father, mother, and others. Islam spares women the embarrassment of having to utter the word.

No matter how much good you bestow upon a woman, she will deny it. Her selfishness drives her to deny it. This holds true for all women, whether Western, Arab, Muslim, Jewish, or Christian. This is the nature of women. When a woman is angry, she completely denies all the good that the man has bestowed upon her. Allah puts women to the tests this way. If a woman overcomes her nature and acknowledge [the truth], she wins and Allah grants her a higher place in Paradise. But if she succumbs to her nature, and refuses to acknowledge the man's rights – or rather, the goodness that man bestows upon her – she is destined to go to… This is because Islam is a religion of justice. If you deny good, you pay the price.
