Egyptian President Al-Sisi at Davos: Time Has Proven the Genius Nature of Sadat's Peace Initiative

#4751 | 03:35
Source: Channel 1 (Egypt)

In his January 22, 2015 speech before the World Economic Forum at Davos, Egyptian President Abd Al-Fattah Al-Sisi stressed the need for a resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of a two-state solution, and said: "Nobody could tell what was going on in President Anwar Al-Sadat's mind when he proposed his vision for peace... But the years that have passed have proven the accuracy and genius nature of his vision."

Following are excerpts:

Abd Al-Fattah Al-Sisi: Egypt will continue to strive to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, on the basis of the two-state solution. This solution will grant the Palestinians their legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent state, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This is the only way for all the people of this region, including the Israelis, to live in security and peace. We will also continue our efforts to protect the peoples of Syria, Libya, Iraq, and Yemen from destruction, and from the continued waste of innocent lives, through political solutions that will ensure the unity and integrity of these countries.

The tolerance of Islam has not been clear to the world in the past 20-30 years. The terrorist attacks and the ugly image of the Muslims shown to the world have made us say that we need to take pause, and cleanse our religious discourse of the erroneous notions that have led to this extremism and terrorism. This can only be done by the scholars of Al-Azhar, and by religious scholars who care about Islam, and about the situation of the Muslims vis-à-vis the world.

No religious discourse can clash with its environment and the world. Therefore, we Muslims must reexamine our discourse. […] Egypt has always played a central role. It was the first country in the Middle East to take serious steps toward peace with Israel.

Prior to the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, nobody had imagined that the peace would take the form that we see today. I would like to use this opportunity to convey this message to the whole world: If we manage to achieve peace between the Palestinians and Israelis quickly, a new reality will emerge in the region. There will be a new reality if we manage to achieve it. I am telling you the truth. Imagine... Nobody could tell what was going on in President Anwar Al-Sadat's mind when he proposed his vision for peace. No one could have seen this coming. But the years that have passed have proven the accuracy and genius nature of his vision.
