Egyptian TV Host Pokes Fun at American Quelling of Ferguson Protests

#4439 | 02:40
Source: Mehwar TV (Egypt)

On August 19, 2014, following Egyptian Foreign Ministry criticism of the quelling of the protests in Ferguson, Missouri, Egyptian TV host Osama Mounir made a sarcastic comment on Mehwar TV, calling upon the U.S. to respect human rights. "We should send Egyptian observers to monitor these demonstrations," he said.

Following are excerpts:

Osama Mounir: This news item makes me very happy: Our Foreign Ministry issued a communiqué in solidarity with the U.N. demand that the U.S. respect human rights and freedom of speech. The Foreign Ministry urged the U.S. to exercise restraint, and to respect the right for peaceful assembly.

We've all been following what has been happening in Missouri these past two days - the demonstrations following the killing of an unarmed boy. We are now seeing how the police deals with U.S. citizens. If I may, I would like to call upon the U.S. administration to respect human rights. I beg you, human rights must be respected all over the world.

Here in Egypt, we respect human rights. I ask you to respect human rights too.

I'm asking a simple question: What do you treat people this way? Why do you beat people up like this? There is footage of girls getting kicked and beaten up. Can we watch this video, please?

Osama Mounir: What is this? What's this supposed to be? Where is Human Rights Watch? Where are all the observers? They should come and see this. Does this please God? Why are you acting this way?

I ask Egypt's Foreign Ministry to call upon all the governments in the world... We should send Egyptian observers to monitor these demonstrations.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry statement, Egypt is closely following the escalation of the protests in Ferguson, and the [authorities'] response to them. We hope that the inquiry will shed light upon the killing of Michael Brown. The killing of Michael Brown... The killing of Michael Brown...

I have nothing more to say.
