Former PA Security Chief Dahlan: Hamas Does Not Know How to Turn Military Achievements into Political Gains

In a July 17 interview with the Egyptian Al-Kahera Wal-Nas TV channel, former PA security chief Muhammad Dahlan said that Hamas does not know how to translate its achievements on the ground into political gains. "The Palestinian people cannot give Abbas another chance at negotiations, or give Hamas another chance at its two-three-week wars," he said.

Following are excerpts:

Muhammad Dahlan: It is time for Hamas to understand that the monopoly it has taken over the notion of resistance, at the expense of the Palestinian people... In Gaza, every time we pay the price of 200-300 martyrs, only to return to square one.

It is time for Hamas – after the dust of war settles – to pause for honest self-reflection, and to return to the fold of the Palestinian people, to the PLO.

[...]

We are not willing to enter war every two years, and to lose 200-300 martyrs each time, along with 1,000 destroyed homes, and thousands of displaced people.

[...]

Sometimes I pity Hamas for its inadequate understanding of politics. By God, if we had their military capabilities, we would have achieved a hundred times more than what they have achieved. By the way, they didn't achieve anything so far.

[...]

I believe that the Palestinian people cannot give Abbas another chance at negotiations, or give Hamas another chance at its two-three-week wars, after which we always declare that we have won, before returning to the siege.

[...]

How can you translate your achievements on the ground into political gains? I'm sad to say that I am convinced that Hamas does not know how to do this. It always loses and blames others.
