Following are excerpts from a statement by Egyptian sports commentator Ahmed Shobair, national team goalkeeper and former MP, which aired on Modern Kura TV and was posted on the Internet on June 24, 2013:
Ahmed Shobair: Four Egyptian citizens were dragged on the ground until they died, just because they were Shiites. It was all because of the takfir campaigns, with people shouting: "Let's crush them!" "Let's kill them! "If they spray us with water, we'll spray them with blood!" This was said by Islamic preacher [Safwat Higazi]. These are their preachers. "We'll crush you! We'll kill you! With bullets, with blood!" This was said by an Islamic preacher.
By God, if you have lived a single minute in the days of the Prophet Muhammad, you would have learned moral values, respect, restraint, and good manners. You would have learned how to talk to people. You have nothing to do with Islam. You are nothing but murderers. You killed people in Asyut. You killed over 180 people – some say 118.
You admitted to these killings. You killed people outside Heliopolis Palace and admitted it. You have killed people in the streets. You have killed journalists. You killed the former Egyptian president, and you did all sorts of other things.
None of you should dare say you are speaking in the name of Islam. Who the hell are you to contradict the Sheik of Al-Azhar? Don't you dare talk in the name of Islam. You are murderers.
