Egyptian Cleric Ramadhan Labib: Polygamy for the Sake of Satisfying One's Sexual Appetite Is Allowed

#2578 | 01:33
Source: Al-Faraeen TV (Egypt)

Following are excerpts from Egyptian cleric Ramadhan Labib, which aired on Al-Faraeen TV on July 23, 2010:

Ramadhan Labib: The Islamic religious scholars have said that there are constraints on polygamy. If the wife is ill and the husband needs to satisfy his sexual appetite, or if the husband has a strong sex drive and one wife is not enough for him, he has the right to marry more wives.

Interviewer: So the religious scholars permitted polygamy to satisfy one's sex appetite, even if only for a limited period of time. A man may have a strong sex drive in his twenties and thirties, which later subsides.

Ramadhan Labib: Yes. How is he to satisfy his appetite during this period?

Interviewer: He can get married.

Ramadhan Labib: He has the right to take another wife.

Interviewer: Just to satisfy his sexual appetite?

Ramadhan Labib: Yes. Otherwise, he might satisfy this appetite in forbidden ways.

If a war breaks out in a Muslim country and many men are killed, and consequently, the women outnumber the men - then polygamy is permitted.
